I honestly don't understand how anyone has been able to rate higher than 1*. Perhaps despite everything, they have somehow managed to hire some lovely staff? Unfortunately we didn't meet any of them and were served by a woman who I'm guessing is the owner. We were a party of 12 who were 'greeted' by a woman with brown hair (not the nice blonde one others have written about) and were immediately made to feel uncomfortable. I felt like asking if we had done something wrong, but I don't see how as we had booked ahead and had just stepped through the door. The woman was weirdly criptic about the sandwich fillings, it took three times of asking for her to tell us what was in the sandwiches rather than just saying 'a selection'. You don't get to choose what you have in your sandwiches or even if you have white or brown bread. You get what you're given and (if you must impose) then you can say if you have an allergy to something. So because some of us didn't want fish fillings, none of us got any because that was easier for them. We had a tall platter with sandwiches, scones and shop bought, cheap tasting cakes. This meant I had to ask the person next to me to pass me a sandwich each time I wanted one. We also had one tea strainer to share between the table of 8 (the other 4 of us were on another table) so that became some weird kind of ceremony where once you've used the strainer you place it on the tea cup of the person next to you. While this became an unexpected bonding experience, I had to wait a while to have my tea as I was at the end of the queue for said strainer. And then again for everyone to pour their milk from the one jug. To be fair there were a lot of Christmas baubles and gold Christmas plates on the table (bearing in mind this is April), so there wasn't a lot of room for silly things like what we were actually paying for. It's hard to describe an atmosphere, but we were basically in what felt like an oppressive, haunted, Victorian doll house, and every time the woman came out to serve us we quickly went quiet out of the awkwardness. The security cameras they had throughout the one room didn't help. So would I recommend it? Absolutely, if you enjoy laughing at just how bad something is. On a side note, just down the street there was a pub called 'the quiet woman' which has friendly staff, good selection of ales and the regulars seem nice and friendly.
