Stayed overnight in hotel above bar, rooms are spacious and very nice, had view of cathedral, room has kettle and free coffee and tea with free biscuits, bar is your typical weather spoon with cheap prices.
On calling in to the Unicorn on Tueday 21st October I felt that the service had gone downhill. The real ale had an inch of head and when asked for it to be topped up the staff asked answered 'what is up with it'. I ordered a classic curry with a side portion of chips paying extra for a garlic pitta bread. The rice was paltry, could not taste the garlic and it was very dry and the chips were nearly warm. Come on the Unicorn, you can do better than that!
Our stay was for four nights. The staff are very nice and welcoming. Ironically, the institutional issues spoil the place. We were in room 110. Our room was made up once! We checked on the policy for housekeeping and were assured that it should be done every day.nOn Monday morning at 0630, we were woken up by an earthquake, or at least it felt like that, as a delivery was thrown at the end of the building. As much as the place ticks boxes for us, it will be difficult to return here.
One of my favourite Spoons. Excellent cask ale lines. Food better than many others. Clean toilets and good atmosphere. Excellent location on the square.
Right on the market square and a prime place to enjoy a meal and a drink whilst waiting for the horn blower to arrive. Bed served us and was incredibly kind, patient and engaging. Food was good and always well priced.
