Established in 1955 The Sports Shop & Toymaster is the original and largest sports & toy retailer on the Isle of Wight.

The business was originally started as The Hyde Road Sports Ground by Geoff & Elsie Young in 1935 from their home in Shanklin.

They had Tennis Courts, a Pitch & Putt course and a Table Tennis room.

They then started selling rackets and operating a re-stringing service until 1955 when they purchased a house in Regent Street, this was then converted into The Sports Shop.

Over the years the two adjoining houses came up for sale and were purchased by Geoff and Elsie and so the business as it is today was born.

In the early 1970’s Geoff and Elsie retired and their son Nigel took over the running of the business with his wife Janet.

The business now consists of three shops, two in Shanklin & one in Ryde, including the Isle of Wight's largest selection of toys under the Toymaster banner.

A fantastic proper toy shop that we’ve visited very time on the island. Although it’s a chain the children very much come first in here. With engaging friendly caring staff who can’t do enough. And a great selection of reasonably priced items there’s something for everyone. As one of the few toy shops on the island they could very easily gouge prices or just do what they like. But instead they show how a toy shop should be run, and are a real credit to themselves. My children leave buzzing about what they’ve got and how nice the staff were who chatted to them. Fantastic selection of model kits also can be found in the shop.
After visiting the store over a period of the last 30 years it was sad to see the store is half empty of stock and looks like its closing. Obviously the pandemic has had a serious effect on their trade and hopefully they will come back stronger.
Wow wow wow, I am seriously impressed. I placed my order for my daughters school blazer and an hour later, a lovely gentleman hand delivered it to me. Turns out, he only lives in the next street and thought he’d drop it off on his way home, that is excellent customer service right there! Also, I happen to mention that I would be placing another order as I had forgotten to order a school tie and he said he would call me over the next couple of days to take the order by phone rather than me having to shop online. What wonderful service and delivered with a smile. Highly recommended, fantastic local business.
Went this morning to the Shanklin store to kit out my eldest for her first high school uniform. Served by a lovely young lady Elise. Very helpful, knew exactly what uniform she needed, picked out the right sizes, was very patient while my daughter was trying everything on. Great customer service which made for a good shopping experience. Even if it was a bit pricey, but that's not her fault. So, thank you.

The shop from Ryde has some great model railway items, I recommend this shop for those who are interested in model railway.
I had 3 tennis rackets re-strung and it was one of the worst stringing jobs I've ever had ! The string was cheap and had NO tension, i have had to take them to get them redone !!
