The Spice Shop

About

Specialist spice shop with a vibrant range of handmade blends, inspired by travels around the world.

Story

The story of The Spice Shop starts in 1990 when, whilst studying at University for an International Business degree, Birgit Erath needed to supplement her income. Starting as a weekend sideline with a spice stall on Portobello Road the business soon became her main occupation.
In 1995 on finishing her degree she found a local shop on the corner of Portobello Road and Blenheim Crescent. Within shouting distance of her original market stall the shop made an excellent base to grow the business.
Over the years her reputation as a spice trader grew, blending and mixing herbs and spices to her own recipes. With recognition from TV cooks and a growing international customer base The Spice Shop grew to offer a range of over 2,500 products. On top of the spices came handpicked makes of essential condiments and early introductions to, currently, popular cousin.
Today, back in her German hometown, Birgit continue to branch out the company through bigger production and wholesale. This whilst still hand making spice blends and running very successful cookery classes.
In London her oldest son, Philip, now runs the shop with the same passion for spices and cooking as his mom. With his own history as a chef he is a go-to for many other chefs and enthusiastic cooks, bouncing ideas and giving advice.
Since 2012 The Spice Shop also has a sister shop in Brighton where our love of spices keeps branching out.

This review actually is a 3.5 I’ve used the place a few times now but found that as much as the spices are nice and fragrant these don’t actually resemble the continent or areas that they come from?! Lebanese spice bought but found this to be more of a Moroccan style spice and not Lebanese. Good shop either way and friendly staff to help you out.
A cute shop with friendly and very helpful staff. The employees were very knowledgeable about their spices and especially the hot sauces and easily guided me in my shopping experience. The spices are a bit on the pricy side but this was worth the trip to London!
If you're in the market for unique spices, this is your shop.
Amazing little spice shop. The assistant was very knowledgeable and eager to help. Buying spices in those yellow tin containers makes for excellent souvenirs.
I am a U.S. customer and found out about this merchant through a cooking show and decided to give them a go; on my 1st order I received the wrong order and emailed them and they immediately sent the correct order. As far as the spices go, of the eleven that I have ordered I have only cooked with two of them and they were "as" good as the merchant that I purchase from in the U.S. The spices that I have used were fresh and flavorful but my expectations were a little higher.
Nice and friendly. Big helper for a spice-novice as me! Helps you to find some fitting poison under a huge amount of sauces in the shop. Love to visit you again!
Long overdue but I went there in October and it was absolutely wonderful! The shop was filled with so, so many things! The lad that was helping me was super kind knowledgeable. My brother and myself really enjoyed the hot sauce that he recommended, really hit the mark! Will be my stop when I'm back home again!
Here you can find all the spices mixes that you need to cook a fabulous international dish at home. Every pack is around 3-4 pounds and it last for few meals. I'm really happy of my shop here. In the photo there are the Bombay potatoes.
A very cosy store but with huge variety of seasoning products. The smell is amazing. It is also located in a very nice neighborhood, Portobello, full of great things. You can also find here some of the most "hot" chilli peppers, good for capsaicine fans.
If I'm in the area, this is my guaranteed stop. They have pretty much everything you need. Great selection of dried chiles. Philip is a nice guy too, great banter.
