Lovely day out. Pleasent journey, Carlisle Interesting plenty of good places to eat, Italian restaurant in the centre of shopping parade excellent. The Castle is easy to get to & interesting to see. The Cathedral can be viewed & enjoyed before or after the castle. Carlisle Station clean & easy for wheel chairs to use with prior notice. Love Settle Station, period and lovely and clean. Disabled toilet exceptional. Free carparking.

To ride on The Settle to Carlisle Railway had been in my bucket list for years but unfortunately the experience did not live up to my expectations! We did this as part of an organised coach trip and we were supposed to have a carriage on the train to ourselves but unfortunately there was only two carriages and because the coach company didn't give us stickers the guide was unable to identify the selfish and rude people who were sitting in our seats so it was manic! We had a cuppa during our ride but again unbeknown to us we were only going as far as Kirkby Stephen! We thought we were going to stop at Dent so we could take photos from the highest railway in the country but it wasn't to be! Also I'd hope it was going to be a steam train but it was a diesel so all in all VERY disappointing and as someone had said on a previous post that the windows were dirty! I know it's on a main line but no doubt it is used mostly by tourists so put on more carriages and go slower so we can enjoy these wonderful views! I didn't get the feel as I went over the Ribble Viaduct as I'd hope - I might have got more pleasure standing and watching a train going over it! The bonus was seeing the renovated water tower that featured on Grand Designs at Settle Station!
