Peaceful and historical far from city rat race. The station was full of calmness, beautiful which brought most memories of my hometown railway station in a small town in Taiping, Malaysia some 14,000 km away from Settle, UK. The time seem to stop allowing us to experience the wonderful, graceful where no one's seem to be rushing around as most of the railway 's patrons were senior citizen and we were the only ones slightly younger to them. Most wonderful and memorable journey in UK. A very recommended stop.
Lovely station, great both for the town & to head off up the Settle to Carlisle railway route or walks in the dales. Lots of information provided by the Friends of the line, waiting rooms have heaters, station kept in good order. Nice shop too.
A well kept station on this famous line. Privately owned cafe serving light meals, snacks, tea, coffee & cakes / scones. Seating inside & out.
Visited the Settle railway station, had lunch at the Royal Oak pub and walked along the river path
Here on holiday, we've been before. Settle is a lovely little place, with plenty of outstanding walks nearby. The railway station is looked after by volunteers. Plenty of eateries to suit everybody's palette. The weather has been perfect while we've been here, so no complaints.
This station has pretty buildings/ architecture
Well, where to start, we were on an organised tour in Yorkshire over Christmas, a key part of this was a trip on this line, the day of the trip changed a couple of times due to the ongoing industrial action affecting Northern Railways. The station at Settle is brilliant, warm welcome by friendly staff, a good shop doubling as a refreshment stop. Class signage to make you smile, hidden Mickies in the station. A good view of the signal box, and the water tower that has been converted into a highly desirable home. Then on a standard Northern commuter train a couple of coaches diesel with very little room, as there were 80 or so on the tour plus the regular passengers on the last Sunday before Christmas. The weather was not kind to us, raining and low cloud restricting the views of the Ribble valley, which was to be the main attraction for most of us. So no stunning views of the valley or the viaduct. What did I expect in December. The volunteers work hard on the train to try and make sure that the experience is unforgettable with a guide to talk you through the trip , and there are things for sale on the train as well.
Hi, I visited Settle on Friday and travelled by train from my base at Dent Railway Station. Settle is subject to trains if you are reliant on them very handy for supplies; I recommend Booths Supermarket for this which is about a five minute walk away. The station itself is very nice indeed and very well kept. It is clear a lot of love and effort goes into its maintenance and presentation. There are the gimmicks: The "settle down" and "settle up" benches on the platform and see if you can spot Mickey and Minnie Mouse - look hard enough and you will see them! I'll give you a clue they are somewhere on the southbound platform area. The staff member present was very helpful when helping me with directions to the supermarket and he was also enforcing social distancing as some spotters were using the bridge which left very little room for people to pass. As you come into Settle on the train the station gives you the illusion of being well above ground and I thought you would have to use stairs to exit, but no, in fact it is easy to access the station via a short street with a not too troublesome rise. This entrance/exit is via the southbound platform. In summary this is one of the most pleasant stations I have ever waited at.
Having been to Settle a few years ago during a Summer break I found my recent visit quite disappointing. Granted it was Winter, but the town seems to have lost it's character. Quite a few shops etc had closed down and the famed railway station has no longer got that "back in time" feeling. It is more commercial now with LED signs that have ruined the touch of years gone by. Really didn't feel as though the trip was worth it.
