I'd been warned that this shop had a "very rude" owner before entering, making the prospect of crossing the threshold of this second-hand bookshop more gleeful in the knowledge that I didn't have to contend with chain shop sales assistants following a generic, regulated and insipid patter. Handing over my 50p entrance fee it was immediately declined for my "willingness to pay". Struck by this unusual exchange I automatically thanked the owner for being "kind"... "it's not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest" was the retort. Irascible, grouchy and difficult the owner may be, but bland he is not. Hawes should count its blessings that they have a rare personality on its High Street.

Why anybody would think that it's an acceptable business practise to charge an admission fee to enter a small and not particularly well ordered bookshop is beyond me. My interest is in transport related books, often in short supply or overpriced in these type of establishments, I'm certainly not going to pay on the off chance there is actually a book I want and at a reasonable price. Like so many others, I just walk straight out again. For those that enjoy paying to view ancient artifacts, then better value would be achieved by visiting the nearest museum.

This bookseller is an eccentric who has responded to a time-wasting public as many booksellers would like! Time wasters in shorts with icecreams who have no real interest in reading are as irritating to serious readers as they are to the booksellers. What's more who on earth expects Yorkshire retailers to grin like idiots and ask you to have a nice bloody day ?

Despite all the media around Christmas e.g BBC Breakfastand and choice of owner to charge 50p (Refundable subject to purchase), that he faivered for me the owner played one out of his record collection 'Hancock's " Blood Donor" sketch, that brought a bit a nostalgic memory flooding back, who says English quintessential is flawed. Hope the main season goes well. Good luck 😋
