It's good that this place within a dog's walk distance of our home, but there are few other factors to encourage us to walk there on a regular basis, which is sad. The place has so much potential. The building was built in 1695 so dates back to the reign of William III (1688-1702). It contains numerous nooks and crannies, and one room apparently has seven doors leading to it. The miller's ancient grindstone is also said to be used as a doorstop. But the place needs to set this history off so it comes to life and we need it to offer a much better selection of wine. The current ambiance and choice here leaves a lot to be desired. California may produce some of the best wines in the world but it has to take responsibility for some of the worst too. And, sorry to say, The Millers Cottage is currently offering the blandest of the bland Blossom Hill. It is an unimpressive example of its type. Rather than choosing a third (or worse) rate Californian white, why doesn't the landlord go for something more appealing for the same price. Isla Negra Seashore Chardonnay, for example, comes from Chile, which is no bad thing, and is a similar price to the Blossom Hill range but a damn sight more attractive. The Millers Cottage, which has a fine historical heritage, could also do more to spruce itself up to make it truly cosy and charming and play to its historic strengths. If only the landlord changed the wines and gave The Millers Cottage more of a smartening up we could well become regulars.
