We had the best night in here watching local talent in an open mic night. The pub was really busy which added to the atmosphere The entertainment was eclectic, singers, ukelele players, unicyclists and much more. Loads of character and extremely well run bar
One of the best bars in Scarborough, huge selection of spirits and great entertainment most nights. The bar staff are very friendly and helpful with going through the drinks on offer. Would highly recommend this to anyone for a drink always a warm welcome
Walking past on Sunday I declined a pint I was on tow with the extended family based on no room at the inn but made a mental note to return based on the craic I witnessed during, literally, the 20 seconds I had my head round the door. I wasn't disappointed upon my return on Friday evening particularly when, safely seated at the bar and Guinness in hand, we realised just the two of us that it was open mike night. I had had a nosey at their Web site earlier which suggested nothing on but I'm not knocking this place for not keeping a page up to date - outside of Dublin this was the best pint of gat I can remember drinking and I was sober at the start of the night. Entertainment was a decent selection of folksters, poets and BGT wannabes so I was thoroughly entertained and after a few more double Js only Irish will do in these circumstances we waddled home still humming the old question "who knows where the time goes?" thanks Sandy. Go raibh maith agat Ireland.
Wonderfully atmospheric pub in the heart of Scarborough, in a beautiful old building with lots of history. Very friendly staff. An amazing pub. I think this is probably the best pub in the town
Really disappointed, some where we have been coming for a long time only to be sat in the freezing cold and then have a member of staff lie about something that was said. It’s okay a member of staff coming over to have a go at us abrupt and rude but apparently it was us that was aggressive. No use apologising on someone’s behalf when when they have lied about you and what was said, we are both lovely people and never had any problems before, normal staff are pleasant and really lovely that we come across but change is a real disgrace.
Hi I am writing in response to the bad reviews we received from one group of customers 2 nights ago don’t seem to be able to reply to the comment directly!. I apologise you felt you were asked to leave unfairly and that you felt the staff were rude. That is never the experience we want customers to have. To elaborate from our point of view, the feeling was the group of customers were behaving strangely, dilated/red eyes and were irritating other customers, as licensees we need to make a decision for the safety, well-being and enjoyment of everyone, as was done in the this case and sometimes it doesn’t go down well. The group was politely asked to leave and became very abusive, swearing at the manager which only serves to solidify the initial feeling it was made clear that it wasn’t a ban and they were welcome back at any time, Just felt that evening it was the appropriate action to take. I hope all our wonderful reviews assure people that this is not norm. We hope as a group you visit again and realise the experience was a one off and was a result of genuine concerns.
This is a lovely Irish pub with a wide selection of whisky and beers with lovely staff, it is dog friendly and has live music every weekend. Highly recommended as a pub to visit while in Scarborough!
Shout out to Jade. One-off shift as a bartender but one of a kind! Thanks for saving me from being disturbed by a creep. Nice atmosphere and great music selection. Not too loud tho. Defo worth visiting if you’re in Scarborough. I’ll be retuning for sure. Close to the beach too
LOVE The Merchant. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and lots of fabulous music. We nearly always 'pop in for a couple' and end up staying all night. Great pub.
