The kids and I had a fab afternoon at Down House! We did the Easter clue hunt and the children found it great fun trying to work out the clues and searching for each one. The hunt took us all through the house and 95% of the beautiful grounds. All except the orchard but we explored that separately once we were done. The exhibits are excellent with plenty of info and interesting pieces. The display cabinets are overflowing with historical artifacts and memorabilia. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Each one in great spirits and were wonderful with the children! Always makes a huge difference when we are exploring. We finished off our visit with ice creams and coffees in the tea room and it was so lovely to have the option of sun or shade on the cute little patio or you could sit completely inside. Lots of choice for drinks, food, cakes and ice creams! Just fab! Will 1000% recommend and hope to visit again really soon!
A fascinating place to visit. I thought I knew a lot about Darwin but learnt even more and enjoyed the audio tours of the house and gardens. Lots to see. Lovely cafe and gift shop stocking some unusual preserves which I bought as presents. The gardens were lovely and all the staff were friendly and helpful making suggestions to enhance our visit. So much to see we were there until it closed! Free entry for members of English Heritage. Photos cannot be taken in the house but souvenir guidebooks are available.
I'm half way through reading Darwin's 'Voyage of the Beagle', so I was especially likely to enjoy visiting his home. However, I was unprepared for how much I would love coming here. On what was a beautiful Spring day, the gardens were a treat, with the greenhouse/laboratory where he conducted his plant experiments in fine fettle. I was excited to see the very room where he wrote 'On the Origin of the Species' and devoured the information contained on the various informative displays. I also thought that the cafeteria was tidy and attractive and the staff friendly and proactive.
The house where Darwin lived from his marriage to his ultimate death. Its a lovely house itself but the upstairs houses a brilliant amount of information about his experiments and life more generally, including his family. Beautiful gardens with loads of space to eat plus a few games too. Really impressed with how child friendly everything was, and there are books you can read to kids in the resource room that helps them understand his theory. Great tea room albeit not much space indoors so probably gets busy in winter loads of outdoor space. Free to members otherwise there is a decent entry fee. Parking for c. 40 cars on site.
A really enjoyable and interesting visit to Down House today. It proved to be quite busy with a coachload of visitors there just before us, surprising due to the narrow approach roads through the Kent countryside! We had a stroll and took some photos around the pleasant and colourful gardens while we waited for the earlier visitors to disperse. Inside and outside seating is available at the tearoom and we sampled some very tasty chocolate cake with a cup of tea before exploring the house. We followed a guide's recommendation to start our tour upstairs where we read about Charles Darwin's life and family. We were then able to explore some of the rooms used by Charles and the family while they were in residence. Highly recommended.
A fabulous view into mid-19th century scientist’s life - both from a family view and a science view. Very nice gardens - a little dry given current weather! Well worth the visit!
Visited Down House today for the first time and it's a lovely place to see. Beautiful gardens to wander around and fascinating look into Charles Darwin.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
Great experience, can't believe he actually lived here. So surreal! Top floor is laid out as a museum with lots of artefacts to look at from his travels. Getting to see his books with his own handwriting was incredible. Downstairs is laid out as it would have been lived in, fascinating. The gardens are also beautiful with lots of veg plots! Go if you get the chance.
Very quiet, calm, beautiful house and lovely garden, good for a trip with the family and kids. Especially, with them learning about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Friendly and supportive staff.
Have lived in the area for years and always wanted to visit Down House. Very glad we went. Thoughtful & informative exhibition about Darwin's life & scientific findings. Would like to return to see the garden in summer. English Heritage staff very friendly & knowledgeable.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
