We came to Canterbury today to enjoy some shopping and have dinner at Wagamama and then stopped by to take pictures at Saint George’s Tower. I would give it a 5 star but the inside of the Tower was cover with bird poop.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A really lovely landmark in the middle of town and also gives you the time. It's a historic piece dating back several hundred years I believe. Also it's a free monument to visit and take photos anytime of the week.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Saint George’s Tower is all that remains of the Church of St George The Martyr in Canterbury. It looks like a Gate to a city wall, but it was a church. What makes it significant is that a couple of people are buried there and it was where Christopher Marlowe The Poet was baptised in 1564. There is a plaque commemorating the event on the outside. Otherwise, it’s just a nice place to duck in from a surprise rain shower or to get some shade. I wonder if the people buried there would have chosen the location inside what was their favourite church had they known that the church would all but disappear and their tombstones would end up as street pavement? At least they are still mostly readable and some still remember them.
St George's tower is all that's left of the church. The tower has a fascinating history if you are into that sort of thing. The tower is located at the start of the high street. Unfortunately you cannot go up the tower, still it is a nice piece of history to go along side the historic Canterbury.

Beautiful tower. The original St George’s church dated back to Norman times, but the present tower is probably 15th century.  The church contained an ornate octagonal font. Canterbury’s most famous son, Christopher Marlowe was baptised in this font in 1564. His parents, John and Catherine, lived in a house almost opposite the church. A woodcut of the church was created in 1825 Image 1 showing it without the clock but with the city’s St George’s gate in the background.  In 1836 a new clock was constructed on the south side of the tower and it was some 30 years later that the church was extended to accommodate the parishioners of the adjacent parish of St Mary Magdalene when that church, apart from its tower that remains, was demolished as it was unsafe.  The St George’s church, its tower and the clock must have been the main feature of this part of the High Street Image 2 . On the night of 1st June 1942 Canterbury suffered its worst bombing raid of World War II. The Marlowes’ house, the church and almost every building in this area of the City was destroyed or seriously damaged. The shell of the church remained for 10 years Image 3 before all but the tower of the church was demolished. The tower and its clock are all that remain of this part of the medieval city Image 4.
Lovely tower, centrally located, historical
Lovely tower in the middle of the street with a clock.
Has my name on the flagstone so of course I loved it.
An attractive clock tower in the heart of Canterbury. It would be great if you could go up the tower.
