We only ate at the Hambrough and the food was excellent. My only negative comment was the actual dining area itself as it was lacking character. The atmosphere was slightly soulless, however the food was absolutely superb and made up for this entirely! The duck was cooked to absolute perfection and the service was without fault. The overall experience was absolutely fantastic and we will be returning again!
Excellent base for exploring southern coast line, Breakfast was excellent and set you up for the day. Quiet but fortunate we were there for Carnival week so got to enjoy the procession and fireworks. Staff all friendly and very helpful with local information.
The Hambrough’s 5-star rating left me scratching my head. The rooms are outdated and not as clean as they should be, with an uncomfortable bed.nBreakfast was a big disappointment—limited choices, not very tasty, and only soy milk as a dairy alternative, which felt restrictive.nFor the price, I expected much more in terms of comfort and quality.nOverall, The Hambrough has a great location, but it falls short in almost every other area. It’s hard to see how this hotel justifies its 5-star rating.
After a long trip up from Cornwall we arrived at the hotel at around 1700. Don’t park at the suggested car park around the back, it’s a long haul down hill and it is definitely not a secure area.nThe receptionist was nice enough and we were given our room. Now it gets grim, pubic hair in the bath, hair and some sort of grease on the headboard, two single mattress protectors, now that’s Fawlty Towers, and when I went to open the blinds there must have been about a years worth of dust and grime on them. Dust dangled eerily from the ceiling…am I painting a pleasant picture.nWe asked to change rooms but not possible, the receptionist, bless her, said she would clean but that was no 30 min job, this needed a deep, deep clean.nLuckily we managed to get accommodation elsewhere, there was no way we were going to stay in that absolutely filthy room.nI have asked for my deposit back but no-one has had the decency to even get back to me, not quality customer service eh?nStay here at your peril! Needless to say we cancelled our restaurant booking, god only knows what the kitchen is like. By way of a footnote: I have received my deposit. Don’t bother with any communication or apology, that’s fine, your actions speak loudly enough.
Disappointing start to the stay when the hotel had run out of hot water so couldn't freshen up. Then, I also found the cold water tap broken in the bathroom and the shower tiling not finished off. The room over all felt a bit tired with marks all over the walls, the lamp shade covered in dust, no biscuits with the tea always a personal gripe of mine if.you use the coffee machines make sure you take the coffee off the top of the machine, we clearly weren't the first to send them flying by the stash under the cabinet, either that or they have secret coffee loving gremlins hording it? The food was very pleasant, but don't expect the large portion of food to be large, it was average for this type of dining. My breakfast was enjoyable, but my wife had the veg full english, and the hash browns were so over fried that they were inedible. The problem is when you stay at a chain that costs less and you get an excellent presented room when you pay more money, well you expect more?! Staff were very helpful and did offer a modest discount for the disappointment.
