Great wee museum. Lots of information on a wide range of subtopics. Loved all of the great models of Dinosaurs that were around the museum. Fantastic way to spend an hour or so. Also a great reading corner with topical books to look through if waiting for another person.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We visited the museum as my little boy whos 6 is completely obsessed with dinosaurs and has been for many years with extensive knowledge of these times even at his age. As a family of 4, 2 adults, 1 child and my elderly father we found it to be a bit pricey and wasn't clear if it was very wheelchair accessible to a 2nd floor. Charging £10 for an adult, £5? for a child it was rather expensive. The lady did give us discount for my elderly relative however it still seemed alot of money for the actual size if the museum with limited amount of exhibitions. We were given a small trial for my little boy to do and was awarded with a certificate once completed which was a nice touch for the dinosaur enthusiasts. I suppose and suspect there may not be alot of council or public funding and post covid it quite possible hit hard times however lowering the fee or having the price more attractive and affordable for larger groups or families especially taking into consideration the cost of living rising like it is it may work out better long-term for the museum and its future as I suspect holiday makers this summer visiting my indeed be put off paying such alot of money for what it offers will definitely put people off visiting unfortunately. Offers, discounts on admissions should be considered especially during busier and during school holidays when families often have already been stung paying over the odds on accommodation due to the holidays. Just an idea....
We popped by today with out 4 year old son and throughly enjoyed the visit. The museum was well laid out and we enjoyed the dinasour trail we were given by Katherine the staff member. At the end my son recieved a certificate and brought a toy from the lovely stocked gift shop. Highly recommend the trip, great location and nearby car parking.
Decent dino exhibition in a tiny space, probably best for the 8-12 age range given the detailed descriptions on the exhibits. Some great information on display that pays tribute to Dorset's heritage as the UK's premier fossil-hunting location, and in particular Mary Anning and her crucial contributions to the field of fossil discovery from nearby Lyme Regis. Some find the price point a bit steep: £10 quid for adults and £8 for kids, but for bona fide dinosaur enthusiasts, this is a must-see in Dorchester. Note: the Dorchester Museum on the high street has more dinosaur exhibits including full sized skeletons and fossils.
It is overpriced for what you get. Especially with smaller children which is what it first appears to be aimed at. Little interactive displays minus a sand table, nowhere to sit and rest, very tiny, a lot to read! The info is there and interesting but anyone under 10 gets bored within 30 minutes.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Very disappointing visit. Went with my in-law family with 4 young, neurodivergent children. To start with, the price has skyrocketed since our last visit with no real explanation as to why there's no new exhibits, activities etc. £12 per adult and £8 per child is frankly daylight robbery with no concessions available whatsoever. Furthermore, the price no longer includes a pass to visit all 4-5 of the local museums in Dorchester, you just get a measly 10% off the next one you visit. The lady manning the welcome desk offered no helpful insight and welcoming customer service was greatly lacking. The 4 young children were given 'quiz sheets' to complete as they progressed through the museum. As for the museum itself, we were again let down. The space looks tired, the interactive activities need redesign and some creative change, and many informative pieces need replacing or fixing scratched interactive exhibits where you can't read any info, the 'quiz sheets' were rendered useless as the answers were hard for even the adults to find. By reaching the final room of the museum, the children were fed up and the adults exasperated. Disabled access is also sorely lacking, which I recommend is rectified urgently. Overall, it was not worth the money at all and we petitioned for, and received, a refund. I appreciate the work the museum is trying to achieve and I am glad they are educating the masses on the great Mary Anning but the museum needs renovating and redesign. Perhaps that is why the prices have gone up, but unfortunately that's not how it works. If you want footfall, you're going to have to invest in it yourself. They won't be receiving a penny more of my money without news of a renovation. Sadly, for the moment, I have to recommend that you avoid, there are other lovely attractions in Dorchester for far less money.
Visited yesterday with our grandson, pricey entry £13 per adult and £6.50 per child, whilst the museum was very exciting for our 4 year old, it was very tired looking in several areas, it's essentially in an old school house building so not very big, plenty to see and touch for a little one but you'd only really spend an hour realistically. However the Dorset County Museum just up the road was 5 star.
Although what is there is interesting and you can spend 40 minutes or so seeing what there is, it's really not all that much for the entry price, it's dated and worn. £36 for 2 adults and 2 4 year olds is very steep in my opinionVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Good place for little dinosaur fans. Lots of fossils / replicas. It's a small museum, but lots to look at! Price is a little higher than I'd like to pay, no café, little shop within the museums ground floor. We spent roughly an hour and a half there.
My 9 year old daughter is a Dino freak. And it was the best day ever. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Great info and design.
