The Derry Walls have lovely views of the city of Derry or Londonderry. You can stroll along them and check out the cannons, which sadly used to point at the Derry, Irish Catholic side of town. The English Protestants were on the protect walled side. A sad picture of what life used to be like in this segregated city. Neighborhood’s used to separated from each other by religion.nnWe had a lovely Buddhist tour guide who showed us about, but you can explore easily on your own, but you might not get the history, which I was very interested in. To me, this city was the where I felt ‘the Troubles’ distinctly. I’m glad that those days are over, as I can still feel the tension.nnWe were here on the Orangeman weekend and most of the Irish people had left to go to Ireland and closed their shops. There were still ashes from bonfires from their marches in some areas. I would not recommend exploring during that weekend, as there were tough looking guys glaring at us when we went to walk down one street; we immediately turned around. An odd feeling to be in a half empty city on a weekend.nnClearly, things are not all butterflies and rainbows. Healing still has to happen.
Nice stroll around the town with great views of the city on the outside and older buildings on the inside. Cool little church. Plenty of places to exit if you get caught in a shower.
A must see in Derry with plenty of beautiful views of the city. We walked the walls without a tour, and if you’ve done your “homework”, that’s fine….if not, take a tour. Plenty of places to stop and read about the history on your own too.
After doing a walking tour, we decided to continue exploring the city by heading to the Derry Murals. I didn't know what to expect or have any expectations, so as we walked along I found the murals very impressive and depicted Derry's history very well. It's hard to imagine that the conflict, violence, poverty, starvation, and political/religious division occurred such a short time ago. It certainly felt like things were on the up and up now but we heard that the unemployment levels continue to big a huge hurdle for Derry. You can tell that the residents of Derry really care about their town and have a personal attachment to the impact of recent events. I was certainly influenced to learn more about Derry, its history and their people and would encourage anyone else to do the same before visiting.nnOne of the most popular murals doesn't necessarily have a direct tie to the political history of Derry, but is a representation of Derry's growing popularity due to pop culture, and that's the Derry Girls mural. The artists really do a good job and this one felt new and vibrant and obviously super cute.
Really nice little town with a whole lot of History, day trip experience for sure! Walk the walk of course and meet history along the way! Lots of neat little restaurants and shopping as well.
