The Covered Market is the historic, beating commercial heart of Oxford—a bustling, aromatic labyrinth of independent trade right in the city centre. Established in the 1770s, its Victorian glass roofs shelter a vibrant mix of butchers, bakers, cheesemongers, florists, and quirky boutiques. This is where locals come to shop and students flock for the legendary Ben’s Cookies and Morton’s iconic sausage rolls.nnFrom my perspective, it’s an essential experience, offering a warm, sensory counterpoint to the university's grand stone spaces. It feels authentically alive, a working market rather than a curated tourist attraction. Come here for an outstanding, quick lunch: grab a sandwich from Maggio’s, a vegan pastry from Vx, or a coffee and cake from one of the tiny cafés. The energy and variety are a perfect reflection of Oxford's community spirit.nnMy advice is to explore every lane—the best stalls are often tucked away. Go in the late morning to avoid the intense lunchtime crush, and have some cash handy, though most vendors now accept cards. Use it as a revitalising pit-stop between the Bodleian and Christ Church, or as a destination in itself for unique gifts and gourmet treats. Don’t just walk through; pause, sample, and soak in one of the city's most cherished and enduring everyday traditions.
We were so happy to stumble upon this covered market while on a date trip to visit Oxford. Of course visiting Oxford was beautiful and well worth a day trip but this marketplace was super neat and had great food. I would highly encourage stopping by and checking it out. There is a brewery that has very good beer and makes a point of hiring ex convicts. A worthy cause.
Such a beautiful market for food, coffee and snacks as well as touristy Knick knacks and some fresh produce. Had one of the best coffees in the uk I’ve ever had.
An Oxford historic gem, and about to be refurbished and updated into an amazing foodie destination. Visit soon early 2026 to see the last historic pieces before the refresh where stores are closing down at the back of the market before creating a larger indoor seating area
Oxford’s historic indoor market is one of the city’s most charming and lively destinations, perfect for shopping, eating, and soaking up local culture right in the heart of Oxford.nBen’s cookies is a must try
