The Cochrane Inn is the ideal place to stop when travelling to or from Ayrshire.

Story

Our traditional country inn has everything you would expect but rarely find - a vine covered building in a pretty village, friendly and welcoming staff, log fire for those winter days and nights, a great range of beers, wines and spirits and outstanding food.

Situated in the village of Gatehead on the outskirts of Kilmarnock our vibrant, busy country pub with beautiful natural stone interior walls adorned with gleaming brasses and an array of artefacts, would love to welcome you.

The restaurant is pleasant with a relaxed atmosphere. Staff were pleasant but service was a trifle slow and they forgot one of the drinks. Ordered mussels to start with, when they arrived they were tasty enough but about a third of them were not open. This would imply that they were not particularly fresh and that no-one is checking the food before it goes out, very dodgy where shellfish is concerned. Main course was well cooked but portions were a bit small given the price. A reasonable dining experience but the Cochrane Inn doesn't live up to the hype.

This has become one of our favourite restaurants. The food is very good, served by very friendly and attentive staff. Finally, and importantly, prices on the whole are reasonable, with the exception being the cost of a scoop of ice cream which can only be described as ridiculous.
