My husband was an inpatient in the Stamford Unit for almost 4weeks in January/February. Having seen an excellent promotional video of the Unit and having heard excellent reports from hospital staff, he had high hopes of continuing his rehabilitation from a nasty infection which had seen him hospitalised for almost 2 weeks. He went there expecting it to be an ‘all singing, all dancing’ experience. buzzing with things to do and confident that with a personalised physio programme, he would soon achieve his former fitness level of being able to walk 2-3 miles each day as an 81 year old. The reality was quite different. His immediate impression was that he had moved into an ‘Old People’s Home’ where about 50% of the patients had dementia. The physio on offer was ‘one size fits all’ and he was somewhat affronted to get a tick for ‘long distance walking’ - approximately 100 yards! It was down to relatives to accompany him on longer distances the length of the corridors. The promised activities were an exercise class one day excellent, bingo the next day not interested and craft activities the next day enjoyable. My husband was able to get his hair cut one day good but there was no opportunity to use the gym nor to enjoy the garden. Some of the health care assistants were lovely, others lazy and disinterested, constantly ignoring patients who were buzzing for assistance. There seemed to be an excess of nursing staff in the hub who apart from conducting patient obs and doing the drugs rounds, seemed to shun other contact with patients. As his wife, I was generally not involved in planning for my husband’s discharge and to be frank, a senior member of the therapy team seemed to see my questions and challenges as interference. My husband’s discharge was delayed by the lack of necessary equipment being available from TGH’s suppliers, necessitating us to buy the equipment so that my husband could come home but also to free up a bed on the Unit, so that a patient in the hospital could be moved into the Unit, thereby freeing up a bed in the hospital so that some poorly patient could be moved from a trolley on a corridor in A&E onto a ward. The sad reality of our NHS today.
After reading the reviews of this unit I was understandably a bit worried about my Mum being admitted. But the staff especially the carers are great very understanding with my Mum who has dementia. She is receiving better care there than she did in the hospital and she is happy in there. So if you're loved one is being admitted to the unit I'd say don't worry about it
This Unit is amazing ! Mum has been here since April on end of life which has now been removed. We visit twice daily but the staff are absolutely brilliant - caring helpful on hand and the place is spotless We cannot thank the staff enough for the care our mam is receiving
My Mum is currently in the Stamford Unit, this is her 2nd stay, on the previous occasion she was a patient recovering from a broken arm and there were a number of issues highlighted such as unnecessary use of bedpans at night and not receiving adequate toileting care, she also didn't get the necessary physio and as a result was sent home barely mobile resulting in another fall this time breaking her hip. She was once again transferred to the Stamford Unit following her Op and I expressed my reservations due to our last experience which was a best inadequate. I was assured my Mum would go to the Stemford Unit with a clear plan in place and that she would receive Physio at least every other day with the exception of weekends. Once again this has not happened and days pass inbetween Physio sessions. I have tried to speak with the Physio Dept but face a brick wall and comments about staff shortages, I did try to ask the gentleman I was speaking to to put himself in my Mum's position, she is 93 years old and before her first fall could get around the upstairs of our home with no walking aids and she is now reduced to sitting in a chair and being escorted to the toilet using a bedpan and an ambi- turn, she is very frustrated and needs help to start to move about on a walking frame, my Mum wants to walk and is very determined but is being left sat on an unsuitable uncomfortble chair for hours every day, at 93 she will eventually lose the use of her legs sltogether if she isn't getting the right Physio. I believe the gentleman took offense at my asking him to put himself in my Mum's position but I'm sorry I don't think this is unreasonable, I was told my Mum may never walk again, this is unreasonable as with the correct Physio there is no reason why she wouldn't walk again.nWould I recommend the Stamford Unit at present, definitely not as I don't believe it fulfils the criteria of a rehabilitation unit. Some of the staff are fabulous but overall this unit is not fit for purpose.nThis review is not meant to be detrimental to some of the very hardworking staff who are probably as frustrated as my Mum and our family are.
My mother was admitted here following a hip replacement, absolutely disgraceful experience, had very little physio to get her mobility back most of her walking was done with the aid of family assistance. She had several days where she was unable to lay on the bed due to breathless, they said it was panic attack/anxiety- completely missed the fact that her heart was failing, discharged her and within 6 hours was blue lighted back into A&E, she was seen by a doctor who immediately diagnosed heart failure! She never came out of hospital again & passed away within a few days!nAwful place that, in my opinion, let her down massively, if you have any loved ones in there, look carefully at their treatment and care.
