Avoid at all costs! I booked a room at this hotel back in December, and unfortunately had to cancel shortly after. The cancellation was well within the free cancellation period. The money was immediately taken at the point of making the booking, but getting it back has been a nightmare. Luckily I made the reservation through booking.com, who have been able to refund me now. Over a month later. I had sent two emails, with no response. I made various phone calls, but was often greeted by a man who wasn't very helpful in resolving the issue. That is when someone actually answered. From looking at other reviews, this is not an isolated incident.
Finally after 4 months of wrangling, I have received the £20 I was owed by the Cafe at the Symphony Hotel!! I was wrongly charged for another customers lunch . The manager acknowledged this when I rang 2 days later but in 4 months was not able to action this refund. 4 phone calls 3 letters later, and after raising a dispute with my bank the money is back in my account. The manager is aggressive and condescending as well as clearly inefficient. If I had walked out of the premises owing HIM £20 I suspect that he would have been more pro-active!! Don't touch the place with a barge pole!!
Cancelled my booking due to our plans changing and have Been waiting a month now for a refund. Everytime i ring to see whats happening, whoever is on reception just fobs us off with a story. As a manager of a hotel myself, its really not hard to refund a potential guest.
A beautiful stay for a short break! Out of season parking for the whole day is 1,70£ just across the street. The room was clean and comfortable, and traditional breakfast was included in the restaurant next door.
Booked through Booking.com The location was ideal right in the middle of the promenade. The cleaning staff was nice and helpful. That was all the good stuff unfortunately. Things we didn't like, well that's a lot longer list. First the location is not what the Booking.com shows. And he said he don't know why the Booking.com put that address there. And that he will contact them to change it it was weeks ago nothing changed. The corridors always filled with cigarette smell. If I would know it's a SMOKING hotel I would have never book a stay there. The room did not looked anything like on the pictures. The room and equipment felt outdated, old and used. The bathroom was renovated but to a very poor standard. It felt like they jut fixed it for the next stay. The shower curtain was fixed on the wall with expanding foam. On the ceiling there were water marks. The wifi was free but it does not reach the last couple of rooms ours included. We noticed that most of the rooms are properly refurbished like on the pictures but there are some left like ours. We encountered a couple who upon arrival and seeing their room just left a note on the empty reception and left. Because there is no reception service any time of day. But at night they won't even pick up the phone if you have a problem. I understand it's a two star hotel, but still there should be certain standards to keep. I guess if you pay extra for the seaview rooms you'd might have a much more pleasant experience.
After a 4 hour drive down to Ilfracombe, I thought this would be a great spot to grab myself some lunch while admiring the ocean views. Upon entering the establishment there were no staff members in sight, so I began making my way towards the bathroom. Almost clearing the bar, an angry middle-aged man occupying a rowdy booth interrupted “can I help you?”. Confused, I replied “no I don’t think so…”, the man then kept repeating himself, receiving the same confused responses. Finally to move the conversation forward, I asked whether they serve food here and he replied “yes, but that’s over there!” aggressively pointing towards the bar. Trying to defuse the conversation, I calmly stated “I know” and continued to the bathroom. Upon refreshing myself, the angry man was now standing behind the bar accompanied with several shady characters, all staring at me in dead silence. He snarkily began “are you going to buy something now?”. I explained that there’s been a misunderstanding and I had full intention of purchasing lunch here rather than exclusively using the toilet facilities – I understand how this can be frustrating, however the way I’ve been aggressively attacked from the onset has made me feel unconformable and put me off this idea. His response was an arrogant dismissal, telling me to get out. Thankfully Dolly’s Café next door was far more accommodating. The angry man wouldn’t identify himself, but after speaking to a few of the locals it was clear that he was actually the manager despite lacking entry level hospitality skills. Don’t waste your time folks, there’s plenty of gems in Ilfracombe!
As soon as we arrived the owner upgraded us too a sea view room free of charge, the rooms are very clean i have no idea why people have written bad reviews! The location is fantastic right opposite the beach and all places close by, the owner is a nice man very helpful and so are the staff Cant wait to return next year Rooms: 5/5
You get value for a money. Hotel was partly in renovation from outside, next to our room, so we were awake already before 7am because of noice. Sea view was nice from room, but little limited by scaffolding. Room had nice old-school design, bed was comfortable and bathroom was fully renovated. Bring your own shampoo and shower gel, as here is only hand soap on sink. No hairdryer, what was inconvenience for me as my hairs dry from 3-4 hours without it. There was no towels when we came, so we asked for it, as we thought maybe they forgot to leave them. After we got only one and was told that is shortage and later they will bring. Nobody brought more towels, so we ended up with one for two people. It was only 2 nights stay so we managed it. Nonetheless, restaurant is serving tasty food. Big portions of meat and starters, we liked especially sheep's cheese tart from starters menu. Restaurant has nice view to shore and hill and modern design with pleasant vibe.
Can be too very different experience depending on the room you get. Booked through Booking.com I Liked · The location was ideal right in the middle of the promenade. The cleaning staff was nice and helpful. Disliked · First the location is not what the Booking.com shows. We had to call the hotel for directions to the actual location. The corridors always filled with cigarette smell. The room did not looked anything like on the pictures. The room and equipment felt outdated, old and used. The bathroom was renovated but to a very poor standard. It clearly showed it was done money saving in mind. The shower curtain was fixed on the wall with expanding foam. On the ceiling there were water marks. It looked shoddy althogether. The wifi was free but it does not reach the last couple of rooms ours included. And lastly the view was non existent even so it wasn't a sea view room. I guess if you pay and extra £100 for the seaview rooms you'd have a much more pleasant experience.
A lovely seafront hotel. Bed was really comfortable and pillows nice and soft. Friendly staff and very clean throughout. Breakfast hit the spot and the 2 resident dogs are gorgeous. Very good price for our 3 nights b&b. Didn't eat in the evening as meals not being served due to winter season. Overall a lovely affordable and clean establishment.
