It is quite hard to find, since it is not in the main church yard, but it is the associated cemetery. This is can be found by leaving the churchyard by the back entrance, crossing a narrow track and entering the cemetery. Silvia lies on the far side of the cemetery. Her grave is better care for than most of the surrounding graves, and has many trinkets, gifts and notes adorning the final resting place of this icon of literature.
It was worth negotiating the cobbled streets and steep hills to see the final resting place of Sylvia Plath.nnAlthough there is limited parking between the cemetery and the church we parked a short walk away in a car park at the bowls club.nnThe grave is situated in the cemetery outside the churchyard and across the lane and is easy to find. The cemetery itself is peaceful and Plath's grave is clearly visited often and tended regularly.nnI've seen reviews mention disappointment at the unkempt appearance of much if the cemetery but I appreciate the wild nature as well as the current endeavours to introduce more wild flowers into the area. There are clear paths around the site to allow people to look at the other graves too.
The whole graveyard is a poor reflection on the local authority. So overgrown..I saw Sylvia's grave a few years ago and it was a disgrace. The whole graveyard covered in brambles. Just been again, and Sylvia's grave has had some flowers planted. But they are now all dead. I feel its very disrespectful of the local authority. They should be honoured that Heptonstall is her final resting place, and should give her grave and the others the dignity they deserve.
Beautiful grave with lots of fresh flowers and trinkets left for her.
Lovely walk with admirable views. Make sure to check out the two churches. Both are uniquely situated within the same graveyard, albeit one has been reduced to ruins.
