"Just a short stroll from Thyme, The Swan sits at the heart of the village of Southrop adjacent to the green. Its recorded history dates back as far as 1606 when it was known as the Bakehouse, serving bread and ale to the farm workers. The Swan is characterised by low-slung ceilings, roaring fires and a spacious garden room - now known as The Carousal. The higgledy-piggledy wooden furniture combined with bright stripes and Bertioli fabrics make the perfect setting for cosy feasting and simple merry-making."

What a beautiful pub and we were so excited to see it reopen. We took some friends over to watch the football on Saturday evening, lovely set up in the Carousel to watch. Simple menu of burger or fish and chips. We had the fish which was watery and undercooked and we both left over half our meals uneaten. To be honest it looked like it had been thrown together. Mushy peas were watery. Not what you would expect. We mentioned this to the waiter when he cleared and he said he would let the kitchen know. We heard no more. Disappointing for such a wonderful pub. Bar staff were could t fault ambiance or bar but food was definitely under par.
Superb. Probably the best pub food in the area. Desserts could be a little more imaginative, but everything was beautifully served and perfectly cooked and the prices are reasonable. Service is excellent too. My only worry is the unprotected candles on the tables. I twice had to move something out of the flame, including a sprig of dried flowers which had fallen over on the next empty table.
Loved our dinner! Thank you so much. The soufflé followed by the pork was perfect. It was great to have a local wine too. Will be back as soon as we can get a table!
If you want a wonderful country pub or a restaurant atmosphere you will be sadly disappointed. The Swan definitely has an identity crisis. Garish décor and bad lighting makes it feel like a 1980s sitting room and the atmosphere is more of a cafe aspiring to be posh. Think of an evening with Mrs Bucket. Fantastic fires though. Menu is short and uninspiring which was a shame but the food was good. Drinks choices are limited - a very basically stocked bar. Closes early - last drinks orders at 10.15 pm with the staff actively pushing us out of the door before 11 pm - Not what you want for a Saturday night supper with friends. According to the manager - "they are trying to do things differently". I am not sure who they are trying to please.
We returned to The Swan for the first and as it turned the last since its reopening last night. We sat on a table of 6 and were left with only a jug of tap water for nearly 15mins without being asked if we wanted any drinks. The waitress came to take our food order and only then after asking, were drinks discussed. It appears they have 1 cider, 1 lager and 2 beers on tap. Make of that what you will. Food was ordered and after a normal wait, starters arrived. These were OK, French onion soup and soufflés. Main courses arrived in due course, burgers, chicken Kiev and vegan burgers. The vegan burgers were very much back to the old days of vegan burgers, no flavour and pretty uninspiring to look at One vegan burger bun was so hard it was inedible. This was communicated to the waitress who apologised and said that wasn't acceptable. Mains were finished and the bill requested. Perhaps I should of made more of a fuss as the bill arrived fully loaded with no reduction for the below par food and the full service charge included. Bill duly paid and we left. If this is the level at which The Swan wishes to run at, it will not be having many returning customers judging by other reviews and certainly not us
Really disappointed. The food took over an hour to come. The table next to us were informed of this and their food came before ours despite having been there and ordered our food 15 minutes before them. Felt we were treated like 2nd class citizens as we didn’t know George the bar man and that we are a younger couple with a baby. Had to go to the bar to order a drink and the food was brought when we weren’t at the table. Luckily there was 50% off food & we didn’t pay the service charge. Won’t be returning
I guess it's ok if you like a restaurant. If you like to go to a Pub. Like so many local village pubs, it is. Then sadly you will be disappointed. The owners of these gastro pubs needs to remember the history of the buildings they are changing and the impact on the local community. Travel down the road to The Keepers at Quenington. You'll find the perfect ballance of really good food and a quality local pub atmosphere.
Wow what a treat, beautiful place, lovely decor and ambiance. Food was great. Really friendly pleasant staff, very welcoming. Very clean.
Lovely english pub, well gastro pub, with glorious fire and grate service. Some dishes were really good and others had tried too hard to be different ie the potted shrimps were too hot both physically and herbaly so don't order without discussing with the staff.
Arrived for lunch 10 minutes late and was criticised by the GM even though there is a 20 minute grace period. The Sunday roast menu was limited so we opted for the veggie roast which is essentially Yorkshire pudding and roast vegetables for £20. £6 off the meat option. It lacked flavour and substance. After an unfulfilling lunch we chose the apple crumble for dessert, the crumble had no bite and the apple was basically purée. Very disappointed after driving 50 mins for a Cotswolds lunch. The Bull at Langford is a far better choice. I will not be returning to The Swan. 2 stars as the decor was ok and our waitress was accommodating.
