St James is a wonderful jem of a village church with an anchoress, beautiful windows and a lovely atmosphere.

Although Shere as a destination is dangerously close to receiving the title "quaintest village in Surrey", its glimpse into the sad misogyny of church history is hard to beat for its hopelessness and anguish. In the first half of the fourteenth century, Christine Carpenter, the famous Anchoress of Shere, was imprisoned in a cell at this church not one but twice. All the documents leading to this life-limiting experience can be viewed this church, together with the remaining evidence of her prison. Of course, this is history long-passed, and the parish today is a busy, lively Anglican hub.
