St Dominic's Priory

About

St Dominic's Priory is a community of Dominican friars in North London, preaching the Gospel from the base of our priory and parish church.

Story

In 1861 Cardinal Wiseman invited the Dominican Friars to serve the influx of Catholic immigrants to the Kentish Town area of London. Within a year or so they had purchased three acres along Southampton Road in a district known as Haverstock Hill, and they had the Cardinal’s permission to build a Priory and a Church there. It was to become the 'headquarters' of the Order in the United Kingdom.

The current church, designed by Charles Alban Buckler, wasn’t completed until 1883. Inspired by the apparitions of Our Lady at Lourdes and her call to pray the Rosary, the Friars agreed that the title of the Church would be “Our Lady of the Rosary” and the building would have fourteen side-chapels each dedicated to a mystery of the Rosary with the final fifteenth mystery, the crowning of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven, commemorated in the stained glass window above the High Altar. The church is one of the largest in London, and its soaring and beautifully decorated interior is hidden behind a relatively plain facade. To enter it is to discover a treasury of riches, much like the Rosary itself which is simple to pray but contains many abundant graces.

For a while the Church did become a place of pilgrimage. For example, in 1895 a pilgrimage was organised for Rosary Sunday with people coming to our Church, dubbed “Our Lady’s Shrine in London”, from all over the city and beyond.

In March 2016, during the Jubilee Year celebrating 800 years of the Dominican Order, the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, announced that he would confer on the church the status of Archdiocesan Shrine, with a mission to promote the Holy Rosary. The Dominican fathers hope that this status will attract pilgrims from far and wide to pray within this beautiful and prayerful church.

Mission

Our vision for our church and Rosary Shrine is for it to become an important centre for promoting Faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, particularly through the Holy Rosary. We want to welcome many pilgrims from far and wide and ensure they have a valuable experience that deepens their faith and understanding.

Absolutely beautiful church with a peaceful and reverential atmosphere. Would love to have spent longer here and hopefully will next time I visit the area. It's the most wonderful spot to spend a few moments in prayer and contemplation.Visited onWeekday
St Dominic's Priory a Grade II listed building is simply magnificent. It is so pure, perfect and peaceful. Everything is done thoughtfully, by the Dominican Friars and Priests. I love it when I see out of the corner of my eye a Dominican Friar walking slowly and quietly along the aisle or standing quietly at the back of the Church, in contemplation and prayer. It is a calming sight. I have found my Catholic Church in the hustle and bustle of London where I can worship, truly worship in complete peace of mind. Everything I need spiritually is here - it is heaven on earth. Thank you to "Radio Maria" for spreading the Catholic faith worldwide.
Great place went for a young adult catholic talk by a wonderful young woman who spoke about the animated film "inside out" showing how mindset can really affect us, our emotions and but extension our actions!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I have nothing but beautiful things to say about St. Dominic's Catholic Church and the Dominican Priests there. While I had lived in Belsize Park for nearly 6 years, it wasn't until December of 2020 4 years after moving to the area that I found this church. In fact, it had been even longer since I attended mass regularly before settling on this parish. Not because I lost my faith, but I was busy working and at the weekends really rested. I also truthfully didn't see much point in attending mass. For me, in the past it offered no value and was a chore. But St. Dominics and the priests there changed that thinking entirely for me. I reached out initially to ask about the process for which my now husband and I could get married. Our wedding was held at a church in NY, USA but to be married in the Catholic Church required us to complete 'pre cana' marriage prep and also submit permission from our parish church to our marriage church to allow them to hold the ceremony and marry us. A lot of 'to do's but St. Dominics made it fun and easy. Iroma the parish secretary was super informative, communicative and helpful. She walked us through the paperwork required and helped connect us to Father Lawrence. I can't say enough glowing things about Father Lawrence. Kind, informative, relatable and welcoming - he showed us what having a community within the church and mass is really all about. He even welcomed our fur baby Gracie who attended each pre cana session with us, and also joins us for mass every Sunday. I never thought I would see the day where a well behaved dog was allowed at church, but like I said - St. Dominics is special. Sermons by Father Lawrence, and all the other priests frankly are relevant, thoughtful and thought provoking. And his leadership and interior design talents are second to none! Just take a look at the gorgeous gold work he's had redone behind the alter, the men and women's bathroom, the common room, or the kitchen in the great hall open to parishioners on Sunday after mass for coffee and tea. They're beautiful! And all designed by Father Lawrence. He even introduced us to another couple also getting married around the same time we were and who shared our same dynamic American, British and dog owners ; So needless to say, attending mass on Sunday for me now is a part of my routine, and helps ground me. I am reminded of what being a Catholic truly means and am grateful to Father Lawrence, the other clergymen and St. Dominics for being there for me in more ways than one these past two years. Though I am moving back to the US later this year, St. Dominics will forever hold a special place in my heart. If new to the area, or simply like me - a Catholic who lost their way a bit - give St. Dominics a try. You won't be disappointed.
Beautiful Church in the care of the Dominican Friars. I went for a performance of Stabat Mater Perlogesi. Cannot comment on Mass as I go elsewhere.
I was there for a funeral. Been past it many times but never been in. It's a huge Catholic church built in the 19th century to cater for the large Irish population in Camden abd Kentish Town
Nice church, friendly people but the service was full of kids that were disturbing a lot. Very sad as it was hard to concentrate.
Passed by last Friday. There was some sermon or mass happening. They handed out an image of the Secret Heart. The atmosphere there was amazing. Been thinking for a while to become Catholic but after this visit I really want to become Catholic.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
My spiritual home in London. I am privileged and blessed to have discovered this church and the community who look after it.
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful Church and Garden. The side chapels/altars are each dedicated to one of the mysteries of the rosary. There is a shrine to our Lady of Lourdes in one of the chapels and a larger one to Our Lady of the Rosary. There's a garden behind the church entry to the right of the main entrance dedicated to the Luminous mysteries. Its a huge church, with a small congregation. Evening Mass was a beautiful service and the feeling of peace and calm prevails.
