I had major issues with my knee because of the amount of hockey I played. So I decided to have it looked at my the the doctor at Sports Medicine Partners. They took a look at it and refereed me to one of their physios. The physio did alot of tests and showed me a series of exercises that I should be doing daily to strength the little muscles around my knee. I did the exercises for 4 weeks and after 1 more session with the physio there was massive improvements. They felt much better. So much so that I could carry on playing hockey (and still doing my exercises just to make sure I can keep playing).
