Lovely area for a revitalising walk. There are many ducks and swans in the water which are quite friendly and can be fed by purchasing some food from the Catalyst shop. There is a play park for children to enjoy and a little zip line. This is also a great area to walk the dogs while enjoying the scenery. I would recommend going for a nice relaxing walk here.
A beautiful area right on the banks of the Mersey. The remains of its industrial heritage are still there including the wrecks of some "flats" flat bottomed boats designed to carry cargo on the shallow river. Kids love the open space and the large number of extremely friendly swans and geese. There is also a well maintained play area.
Saw those posts in a cafe shop. Had a nice walk along the water and saw a few big fish swimming there. Nice place for cycling as well. Love the view of River Mersey.
Absolutely beautiful place! Great place to go to get fresh air- especially so after lockdown! Beautiful birds as well and the canal!
Lovely place for a few hours. Lots of history to the place. Home to the Hooper Swan. Went here on a bike ride. Great views across the Mersey estuary.
Nice place to go if you want to have a walk. I have never seen so many swan's in one place before! Free car park and children's play area are located just to the side. If you are using SATNAV search for Catalyst Science center. Crossing point is to the righthand side of the cafe area.
The best place for any leisure activity, dog walking and/or sports. You can even go fishing in the Mersey. Playground: There are safe games for children of all ages. Dog-friendliness: A real dog-friendly park. A lot of people go here, it's a good social space for dogs.
The Tran Pennine Trail goes right through this coastal area so I've split the route into two halves, East and West, using Spike Island as a central point. All trails are firm and well kept but I would recommend stout footwear in the winter months. At the moment the canal is experiencing issues and is practically drained. Hopefully this situation will be rectified soon but I have taken a bit of author's licence here and included photos taken recently, before these issues began. To get there use satnav reference WA8 0DG. Car parking is free and there is a cracking Boathouse cafe on site. To follow this route turn right at the canal then cross over the lock gate bridge and keep to the estuary edge. At the end of that path you'll see a Trans Pennine sign to follow up the estuary, underneath the new Gateway Bridge, with good views out over the marshlands. I went up as far as the Future Flower art work and turned around there. Back at the sign, keep the canal on your right and return to the Boathouse. The second leg is to the west, past the unmistakable Jubilee Bridge with the old rail bridge by its side. On this side there are more stunning views of the bridges and the estuary. You can continue along the Trans Pennine Trail as far as you like, I turned around at the steps and smaller foot bridge over Ditton Brook.
Great place for a walk with stunning views of the Mersey. Boat House cafe so cheap and tasty can't rate highly enough. Lots of history also it's the birthplace of the chemical industry hence the large canal to get products in and out etc. Definitely worth a visit I will be exploring the Catalyst Museum next time I go for even more information.
we have to get spike Islands canal back to normal the council want to fill it in they don't care about the history or the wildlife of our area they're only interested in building new houses and making money.
