Story

Somerset Rural Life Museum is reopening in June following a major £2.4 million redevelopment.

The museum tells the story of Somerset’s rich rural and social history. Visitors can enjoy the five Farmhouse Galleries which explore the themes of ‘Creating’, ‘Learning’, ‘Believing’, ‘Celebrating’ and ‘Remembering.’ In the large Farmyard Gallery the major themes are ‘Working Village’ and ‘Working the Land’.

The magnificent 14th-century Abbey Barn remains the centrepiece of the site. Outside spaces, including the Farmyard and the Orchard, contain sculpture and family trails that interpret the history of the site and its buildings.

The Farmyard Café will be open all year round at this family-friendly destination, offering high-quality locally-sourced food and drink.

We will be open 10.00 am to 5.00 pm, Tuesday to Sunday until the end of October and Tuesday to Saturday from November to Easter, plus Bank Holiday Mondays.

The museum is part of the South West Heritage Trust, an independent charity committed to protecting and celebrating Somerset and Devon’s rich heritage. As well as the widely-praised Museum of Somerset and the redeveloped Somerset Rural Life Museum, in Glastonbury, the Trust manages state-of-the-art facilities in Taunton and Exeter to care for the extraordinary archive collections of the two counties. The Trust also provides essential advice about the historic environment and manages historic sites.

A beautiful well designed building, the artefacts are clearly and attractively presented. A reflection of the tools which were everyday objects, appear soulful. A story in every horses shoe, or cobblers wooden foot. Lovely coffee and cake in the cafe as well. Soul at Heart Counselling.co.uk

Visited the museum just after the refurbishment had ended. Before the face lift it was a bit dreary but now it has a sleek and modern feel. It presents information in a clearer and more entertaining way by using interaction tablets, audio and noises for the display. The only downfalls was that you could not find the entrance as it was tucked away in the back of the property and there was no signs. Walking around the museum seemed confusing at times as we couldn't find ourselves on the map. We found it difficult to find which ways to go in some of the rooms due to lack of signs/unclear signs. As we came just as it opened back up again we entered for free, but the price is about 6 pounds now I believe. I wouldn't pay that as there was not enough content in the museum that interested me. A lower price or donation only could work better.

A very interesting exhibit on rural life. Didn't feel swamped with information, just enough on each exhibit to keep it interesting.
