The station opened in 1849 and closed in 1947. The railway also opened in 1849. There is a campaign to reopen it. Friends of Askern Railway Station is an organisation that wants it opened as soon as possible. Campsall, Sutton, and Norton have bus connections from Askern. Moss and Fenwick don't have a regular bus service but the station is likely to increase the demand for one. Sykehouse was also on the irregular bus service to Thorne. Askern has some retail, a market and a lake. The Railway is likely to be an inn if there is enough demand.

There is only one way to get access to the site beyond fencing, a Grand Central train between Doncaster and Pontefract Monkhill. The route runs between London and Bradford. The Pontefract Line terminates at Knottingley which will need Doncaster branch platforms. It will be able to go to Doncaster opening a new corridor for passengers likely to be frustrated with worsening bus services.
