This is a visit I have been wanting to do all my life and today was the day. This was definitely worth going to see and is definitely a Jewell near Margate town centre. A little tricky to find as you don't expect to find it where you do. You must be able to go under ground. Literally thousands of shells in beautiful patterns are fixed to walls of the tunnels. Lovely Museum and she'll shop to buy souvenirs
Very interesting place to visit. It's on a residential street and doesn't look much from outside but once you walk inside you are straight into the shop then towards the back of the shop is the grotto entrance. Entering the grotto is down a few stairs into a little area giving a bit of info about the grotto, then down another, slightly steeper set of stairs. It's narrow in the grotto but still possible to pass other visitors. It really is a stunning place and you do walk round wandering why and how someone would make such a place.
The Shell Grotto was a very interesting place to visit. It's stunning to see such a unique work of art and its even more amazing to learn about the mysteries that surround it. It's definitely instagrammable. Note though that it's a bit dark inside perhaps cozy is the right word. So be sure to keep still when taking photos. The dimness though adds a bit of mood to the photos so it's still okay. The place itself is a bit small. If you walk around without paying any much attention to the art, you might finish in less than 5 minutes. But that's not really the point. I think to fully enjoy this place, you actually have to stop and observe the walls, the way each segment is different from the next. I mean the level of patience it took to create this place is just incredible. Imagine making the wall designs out of more than 4 million sea shells! And it's amazing that today, it is still preserved. Side note if you collect postcards: Just outside is a souvenir shop which sells the best postcards we've seen in Margate. For the 4.50 entrance fee, its not a bad place to visit if you have time to spare when visiting Margate.
Such an unique place Shell grotto. It’s not far from the beach, walkable distance. It takes 20 mins to see this whole place which is in underground. The Grotto made by millions of shells. They estimate the grotto to be around 2000 years old. Those who believe the grotto may be very old suspect that it was probably used as a place of ritual worship or a temple. The altar with celestial bodies surrounding it suggests the significance of earth, nature, sky, seasons, and the elements. Worth a visit !!!
What an amazing site and sight! If you read the information on the displays you will be thinking, how did any one live long enough to complete such a marvel! It doesn't take me long to complete the tour but it's gotta be a bucket list item.
Very special and interesting tourist attraction in the centre of Margate. This is definitely one of the most amazing sightseeing places I have visited. Located in the centre of town with parking available on lots of streets nearby this is definitely worth visiting if you are in Margate for tourist attractions. Not expensive and you can book on the website and just turn up. Absolutely unbelievable place and it's hard to describe how amazing. Very good information provided and doesn't take long under 30 mins to see it all and explore it properly. I would recommend this if you have time in Margate
Very interesting Grotto with unclear history as to who and when it was built. Intricate shell designs on the walls and a shrine. Been to Margate loads of times and have been aware of it for ages but never visited until now. Well worth a visit.
Really impressive shell grotto. It’s quite a bit from the seafront so there aren’t too many people there. There’s a small exhibition explaining all the information about it before you go down and you’re free to spend as much time there as you like. We were there about 30 mins in total. The shop is really good too.
This is a cool place at Margate. Definitely worth going if you are in the area, but don’t go just for this place. While it’s a very interesting place, it is very tiny and the ticket price to go through the grotto in the basement is atrocious for its size. It’s still a very good gift shop and a cute place to check out.
This shell cave was really interesting to visit. You need to appreciate the hard work that was done there. We love the designs and things they made with shells. Little shop with lots of interesting stuff at good prices. Little creative area for kids. Not to big but really great to visit.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
