Salts Mill

Story

Salts Mill is a former textile mill, now an art gallery, shopping centre, and restaurant complex in Saltaire, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1853, and the present-day 1853 Gallery takes its name from the date of the building which houses it. The mill has many paintings by the local artist David Hockney on display and also provides offices for Pace plc. When completed, the mill was the largest industrial building in the world by total floor area. It is a grade II* listed building. The mill closed in 1986, and the following year it was sold to Jonathan Silver, who began a long renovation scheme.SpellingThe spellings Salts Mill and Salt's Mill are both commonly used. The former is used consistently by the Salts Mill website and the Saltaire Village website; the latter by Visit Bradford from the official Bradford Tourist Information service. Both versions are used in the UNESCO World Heritage documentation.

We parked on Caroline Street for £1.50 per hour able to extend on RingGo app. Queue for food was quite long but we got in early at 11:30 which seemed to beat the queue. Pizzas were amazing! There is another cafe on level 3 if you want to skip the long queue. Exhibits were nice and the activities in the Peace Museum upstairs were great.nnOnly suggestion to management is have some signage for prams/wheelchairs. Accessibility at the two entrances/exits we saw were none existent.
What an amazing place to visit, and so much to see!nnBeautiful art and photography displays, a book store, antiques, jewlery, hiking wear, peace museum and more. Even a few caffès/ places for food in there too.nnI recommend setting aside a couple of hours if you really want to make the most of your visit here!nnThere are also elevators to access all floors.
A wonderful afternoon out! If you like: art supplies, modern home decor, books of any variety, large open spaces with lots of natural light, this is worth the trip! An old textiles mill that has been left largely untouched. 1st floor focuses on art: lots of pictures on the wall with tables full of art supplies, books on many forms of art including photography etc. 2nd floor focuses on modern home decor, Alessi kitchen supplies, a cafe dairy free catered for with some options - dairy free milkshakes are divine!!, antiques, photography exhibition space. Half of the 2nd floor is a bookshop with the most beautiful, interesting books on so many topics! Fantastic children's section. It was like being in a good sized Waterstones. We didn't so the 3rd floor - saving it for another day! We were there 3.5 hours probably needed another hour and a half to do everything.nThere is a free car park, but be careful you don't accidentally park in the private car park as you'll receive a fine!
It’s always good to take a friend from other areas to visit places you enjoy and find they like them too. Salts mill and Saltaire is such an unusual place combining history via art through Hockney and industrial skills - the mill itself and the town of Saltaire.nThe town has a character modern towns usually lack and the mill shows industrial heritage where money talked and could be good for the workers. Pity more entrepreneurs don’t build new towns around their dream developments!!nWe enjoyed the art, the spaces within the mill which is huge including the cafe and book shops.nWe saw some video footage of how the mill started but didn’t see it all. Think we should return to learn more.nCafe - we had to wait a while but it was ok and the lunch was fine-tasty and reasonable.nTake time, don’t rush and think about the original workers but also the dedication of Jonathan Silver who so valued this place and ensured it became a valued place in industrial history.
A really wonderful place to stroll around looking at nice things for 3-4 hours. A fantastic use of an historic and beautiful industrial business with a very uplifting and important heritage, especially for this part of the world. The video showing the story of what it was and how it became what it is now and why it is a UNESCO site was very moving. So much art and photography to see, choc a block with Hockney works...all for free! The Ian Beesley exhibition was a highlight for me. The antique shop too. The Peace Museum is cool too. Also, probably the biggest building I have ever been in and with lots of original features...The sheer scale is incredible. Be prepared to walk lots.
