Salford Shopping Centre has over 80 stores, services & eateries all under one roof, from well-known brands to independents retailers.
The history of Salford Shopping City dates back to 1957, when the Ellor Street Development Plan was first announced. The plan proposed the demolition of 6,000 houses over a 300 acre site in the Hanky Park (Hankinson Street) and Ellor Street areas of Pendleton.
In 1958, a scale model of the Ellor Street Development Plan was exhibited to the public for the first time, which was designed to address Salford’s housing issues ‘all in one go’. It was officially recognised as the biggest scheme in Europe at the time.
What followed was three years of demolition work, during which time the master plan for a shopping precinct was commissioned by Salford Council. In 1962 the £5.25 million plan was given the green light.
Building work took place between 1962 and 1970, during which time three 16 storey blocks had been completed and become occupied, and on May 21,1970, the new Salford Market officially opened.
Work continued apace, and in 1971, Tesco became the very first shop to open in Salford Precinct.
The Salford Market and Salford Precinct continued to trade successfully for 20 years, and in 1991 the building was refurbished including the installation of roofs across various walkways, making large swathes of the centre undercover.
At this time, Salford Precinct was officially renamed Salford Shopping City, and the site continues to go from strength-to-strength under new ownership. Comprising over 100 shops, it still sits at the heart of the local community.
