I have visited a castle and I must say it was quite a charming experience. Although the castle itself was on the smaller side, it had a cozy and intimate feel to it. The highlight of my visit was the beautiful old collection on display. It was fascinating to see such unique and well-preserved artifacts from the past. The castle is also a great place for sightseeing, as the surroundings are picturesque and offer some stunning views. Overall, it was a lovely visit and I would recommend this castle for anyone looking for a charming and educational experience.
Great Castle Ypres Castle nice views of Rye Harbour, from the top of the tower. The Gun Garden is free to walk around and still great views over the harbour. Lot's of cannons. There is also public toilets here. The tower is £4 to go in and is very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit. Go down the path to the road to the Ypres Castle pub.
Really interesting castle museum in Rye with a fascinating history. Some great views from the top and into its medicinal herb garden. Audio/visual tours available if you can't manage the steps and reasonably priced at just £4/adult. Dog friendly. Well worth a visit.
Bite sized history in Rye... 100% recommend a stop here as you walk around the village. We especially loved the room dedicated to old songs... shanties and smugglers. The ladies prison in the garden... not a bad place to be locked up
I love history and Rye has it. Ypres Tower sits right by the river Rother. Walking down cobblestone streets by Tudor buildings to get to the Rye Castle Museum was lovely. It's small, affordable and a pleasant way to spend a little time. I can't wait to come back and visit more of Rye.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I really can't recommend this little museum highly enough. We had a lovely welcome with extra information freely offered. No, it isn't a National Trust property with the familiar and frankly somewhat bland approach and no, there isn't a gift shop selling foam swords, bags of fudge and blankets with no relevance to location... thank goodness their gift shop sells local books and a couple of odds and sods visitors may choose to purchase. The Chambers upstairs have some fun artefacts and it didn't bother me at all that the condemned cell was open... but being used to store a couple of boxes. I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely like the fact that this is a very small, very old castle rather humble attraction being run by local people who have a passion for their shared history. The tiny enclosed garden at the back is nice to stroll through for a visit to the women's jail, where you can listen to a pair of very short tempered ladies having a barny about prison life. I would suggest asking about the story behind the skeleton in the gibbet and Captain Pugwash!
Very interesting little castle with some very nice views of Rye town and the surrounding areas. The area around the castle is also very interesting and well worth the uphill walk.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Always worth a visit, small museum solely about events in Rye in bygone years smugglers, gibbets, police, military all Get a mention, the interactive map showing the changing shoreline is a most important exhibit, should be an eye-opener for many people And the view from the terrace on a sunny day is wonderful!
A rather strange small exhibition set in what is undoubtedly a historic building. A few nice touches in the pieces on show and an opportunity to test your strength with the ‘pull’ of a longbow but I was a little disappointed, perhaps expecting more. Useful, worth a look but could certainly be made rather more of. The surrounding area is also worth a look with its cobbled streets and churchyard
A rather small tower / museum but packed full of informative displays and exhibits. Very helpful, knowledgeable staff, happy to spend time with you if not too busy with other visitors explaining the history of the Ypres Tower and Women's Prison. Dog friendly and well worth the £4.00 entrance fee. There are some narrow spiral stairways and low height doorways...
