Rufford Abbey

Story

Rufford Abbey is a country estate in Rufford, Nottinghamshire, England, some 2 miles (4 km) south of Ollerton. Originally a Cistercian abbey, it was converted to a country house in the 16th century after the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Part of the house was demolished in the 20th century, but the remains, standing in 150 acres of park and woodland, are open to the public as Rufford Country Park. Part of the park is a Local Nature Reserve. The house itself is constructed of rubble, brick, dressed stone and ashlar with ashlar dressings and plain tile roofs. It is Grade I listed and scheduled as an Ancient Monument. The Monastic FoundationThe abbey itself was founded by Gilbert de Gant, on 12 July 1147, and populated with Cistercian monks from Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire. The English Pope, Adrian IV gave the blessing for the abbey in 1156, following which the abbey's lands expanded and the villagers of Cratley, Grimston and Rufford, Inkersall were evicted. A new village of Wellow, just outside the estate housed some of the displaced people.

A good variety of well presented environments in a relatively small country park. English Heritage maintain the historic ruined abbey/house which is its centrepiece, has informative story-boards which could be better lit. The sculpture garden is well worth exploring. The Saville restaurant is atmospheric with good standard food menu. And the lake & woodland walk is beautiful. Great family venue which is busy in school holidays & at weekends.

Its a lovely place, loads of space for a picnic. They do a fantastic trail, whether it be fairy, Halloween or Christmas! The only thing I would say, you pay for your parking but there is no sign to say - you don't need to keep it in your car! In fact if you take it with you and spend over £15 in the cafe, you can get the £3 for parking off your bill!!! Handy when there's 6 of you eating :-) x

Love this place! Only hope it doesn’t change too much with new partners bringing new ideas .....although I do like the idea of an Ice Cream Parlour! Miss the artisan pottery though, shame that has gone. Annual parking ticket is a good idea as I go one or two times each week. On wet/inclement days, lovely to stroll around in peace and quiet. Have a lovely plaque dedicated to my mum and dad on the Memory Wall and visit it often. A lovely, unspoilt Country Park.

Attended for the Christmas market and had a lovely time. The stores were much better than at the other markets which become very samey. However I just wish there was more of them. We made some great purchases for token gifts for people and also had a lovely walk. This is the first time I've been to Rufford Abbey so I will definitely be returning for a proper walk around and to test out my new camera!
