Story

The Royal Victoria Infirmary is an 673-bed tertiary referral centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The hospital is part of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is a teaching hospital for the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.HistoryFounded as the Newcastle Infirmary in 1751, the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, was opened on 11 July 1906 by Edward VII on 10acre of Town Moor given by the Corporation and Freemen. The fully furnished and equipped hospital, containing twenty wards, a nurses' home, chapel and five operating theatres, cost over £300,000,000. The statue of Queen Victoria was the gift of Riley Lord, who was knighted for his efforts in getting the Infirmary built. Overcrowding was a problem, with waiting lists of over 5,000 in the 1930s and until joining the National Health Service, money had to be raised for extensions and new equipment - always difficult especially in the depression years. The Royal Victoria Infirmary has always had close links with the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Newcastle University as a major teaching hospital. The RVI forms the hub of one of the four "clinical base units" for medical students at the university, where students spend the entire 3rd and 5th years of their medical degree.

I had a really good experience in A&E this evening. For the first time me and my partner are visiting Newcastle and I started feeling poorly with my asthma. Doctor, nurses and receptionists where very polite and friendly. The wait was not too long and they gave me treatment. I felt listened to and looked after. Really impressed. Well done medical staff.
My Son was seriously injured on ventilator for 6weeks in ward 38 and the attention and care of the staff was 100% giving 24/7 care constant treatment and never left on his own. Various skin grafts by surgeons and all staff. He then moved to the burns unit ward 37, for his rehabilitation and treatment for burns who were also constantly doing his dressings whilst on ward 38 who are all brilliant and he's making huge improvement everyday. Thank you to all the for your care, support and expertise.
I would like to thank Dr Boag and all his team on Immunology outpatients for their kindness, smiles and help they gave me. Special thanks to Denise for going the extra mile. Keep up the good work, it makes all the difference to be greeted by nice people.
This is a top Hospital one of the best in Europe and I would argue, one of the best in the world. It is very well run it has a Northern ethos of serving the public the best ways they can. You will have difficulty faulting this Hospital. Its Childrens Wards or Hospital is 2nd to none. It has a brilliant reputation in dealing with children with cancers. It is the regional major trauma centre. They can do it all here. It is also massive it is a huge Hospital. Adjacent to it on Richardsons road and with the RVI is the World Class Dental Hospital. It teaches students from sixth form to being a qualified Dentist ready to go out and save the nation's teeth and smiles. The RVI is a teaching hospital where students go from off the streets through apprenticeships to skilled and technical jobs outside of being a Health practitioner. There are many apprentices for local Geordies from being a clerk to being a qualified registered electrician plumber and other skilled jobs I can't fit into this review. And then there are apprenticeships and degrees for health professionals working in Laboratories and in support of patients on the wards. It's a thriving place with happy caring people all over it.
Professional and courteous staff, sadly a handful of patients due to the long wait which I believe is acceptable but the odd few kept staff distracted enough to keep the disruption going all day. However the staff are extremely diligent and on top of their game it seems.
Perhaps they are just overworked and understaffed but I found the triage nurse in the A&E department quite condescending and unhelpful. She certainly was in no rush to speak to people coming in and instead had a good gossip with colleagues whilst not acknowledging the person at the from for 15 mins or so. Also had a bit of an attitude when they did speak to me or maybe just been in the job too long. I'm sure the staff are great once you get past. However not the reception you'd hope.
My husband and I have been travelling around Scotland and England and haven’t been well. While staying In Newcastle-upon-Tyne, we decided to go to the recommended RVI Royal Victoria Infirmary to see a doctor. The service from entry to exit was exceptional!! We were in and out in just under 55 minutes!! That doesn’t happen in the public hospital sector in Australia. Many thanks to all the admin staff for their proficiency and to Nurse Practitioner Steph and Dr Danielle Wood. The systems you have in place are 2nd to none. THANK YOU!!
I couldn’t have had a better experience.. The nurses at ward 41 maternity made me feel so comfortable. All the staff were warm and SO caring. It felt like I was surrounded by my family. I am returning for my C-section in April at this hospital no doubt. Incredible service.
Went in with a minorish issue. Within 5 hours I'd had an ECG, Blood Test, X-ray and a full rundown by a doctor. Absolutely fantastic service, thank you so much!
I attended the Breast Screening dept. Was treated with courtesy and respect. The procedure was explained to me in a clear way that was easily understood. I would have no hesitation in recommending anyone.
