The Reel cinema is unfortunately closing due to competition. However, our visit was an eye opener compared to modern cinema's. The screen was a suitable size, unlike the massive screens in a modern one. It had nostalgic red curtains that pulled back when the showing started. The seats were somewhat uncomfortable, plus they were the spring back seat type. I guess due to its age, the best was made from a somewhat out dated design in its modernisation. There was a distinct lack of any air conditioning or even extractor fans in our screen 3. As it became quite close and musty. This didn't distract from the brilliant film being shown, which was HURRICANE. A film about the Polish 303 Fighter Squadron. The price for seniors was £4.50p each as well as a free drink. This cinema, all said and done, is a past era classic. I personally enjoyed our visit.
I really wanted to like this cinema as it's so much cheaper than the rip off prices at the Vue. But the ceiling lights were left turned up bright presumably due to some EU inflicted health and safety law but their ancient screens do not have the ability to cope with this extra light so the image contrast is terrible and washed out. Also the sound system is no where near loud enough to drown out the audience's coughs and packet rustling and I missed several sections of dialogue during quieter scenes. I was in screen 2 watching black panther.
We were really happy to come and watch Mary Poppins at the Reel - our favourite cinema by far and it was bittersweet as this would be our last time before it closed. It shouldn't be closing and we have loved it very dearly for years. The staff are great, the refreshments affordable, service brilliant and the viewing experience is always enjoyable. It's only slightly cold at times but I assume it's the age of the place and the size and we can discount this little point overall!
You get what you pay for. The ticket prices are very cheap- amazing for students of which there are many in the area. However, there is a very good reason for this. The cinema is very old, outdated and run down. It looks like it was a theatre turned into a cinema. There are obstructed view seats and the screen was at an angle which was annoying. The seats were uncomfortable and I would hate to watch a film over 90 minutes. Many of them are falling apart with bin bags around the many out of order ones. Can be amazing with a lot of money and TLC, with the prices being the only redeeming quality.
The place is old and damp but at its cost that it is something you can overlook . The main screen is substantial in size although one of the screens is barley larger than a TV at which point even the low costs cant justify going. The toilets are awkward and honestly rather creepy, I would also not send a child there alone under any circumstances as the path to the toilet isn't very straightforward. This cinema doesn't come close to comparing with the larger Vue cinema in quality but if your on a budget I definitely would give this cinema a fair chance.
Looking for a huge screen cinema complex? Look elsewhere. The reel is small, dated and tired looking.. However, they provide superb value for money. Tickets and food are very cheap and they provide a good selection of films including the latest blockbusters. Service is good. They've certainly found a by going the extra mile to compete with the bigger competitor. Top tip: Saturday morning children's club is ridiculously cheap. The whole family can watch a film for around a fiver all in. Great little cinema.
It's an old style cinema that's why is good to visit it. The seats were good. There are plenty space. The toilettes were clean. It was easy to collect the tickets I booked online. I didn't like the sticky floor in the room and 20 min of advertising.
Small seats but comfy enough, smallish screen than the normal ones but good quality and sound. Nice staff on desk when walked in however at the end of film had an encounter with an extremely rude member of staff! Will not be returning because of this reason but the cinema itself is good value.
Lovely staff, good size screen. It has the same feel as when I went there as a kid. I now take my own kids there but really wish they would do something about the seats and reading other reviews, I don't think I'm the only one. They are really tatty!
It's cheap, especially as you can usually get 2 for 1 tickets on Groupon, but if your really into films and wants the full experience of going to a cinema, the sound system and screen aren't up to scratch. I was a little disappointed I watched Star Wars there, but it's fine to watch any other films that don't use heavy special effects.
