Reading Station

Story

Reading railway station is a major transport hub in Reading, England. It is on the northern edge of the town centre, near the main retail and commercial areas and the River Thames. Reading is the ninth-busiest station in the UK outside London, and the second busiest interchange station outside London, with over 3.8 million passengers changing trains at the station annually.Reading is one of 19 stations managed by Network Rail. The station is served by three train operating companies: Great Western Railway, CrossCountry and South Western Railway.HistoryThe first Reading station was opened on 30 March 1840 as the temporary western terminus of the original line of the Great Western Railway (GWR). The time taken to travel from London to Reading was reduced to one hour and five minutes, less than a quarter of the time taken by the fastest stagecoach. The line was extended to its intended terminus at Bristol in 1841. As built, Reading station was a typical Brunel-designed single-sided intermediate station, with separate up and down platforms situated to the south of the through tracks and arranged so that all up trains calling at Reading had to cross the route of all down through trains.

I use the train station every single day to commute to college and work, and I’m usually really good with keeping my tickets, I had about 5 card receipts in my wallet, honestly such rude behaviour, the Jamaican man at the gate could have shown more compassion ! He said “you need to buy a new one “ well sorry not everyone has £15 to waste, he should’ve understood my situation better, he even sees me coming in and out every single day, They should train their staff more and change their rules, I asked if they can check my card history and they will see I have indeed brought a return ticket or look at their history, lad said nah you can’t do that, and I asked well what if someone stole it from me ? Will I get a refund ? “If you find it” he couldn’t have cared less. So unhappy, waste of time trying to talk to them. The lady next to him just stared at me, it’s intimidating and not nice :(

Much improved and enlarged now with 15 platforms compared with the previous 9. The over bridge is open at both ends resulting in snow and rain making the floor a bit slippery. Getting say from platform 15 to say 1-7 requires navigating an escalator and you require plenty of time. Plenty of clean toilets, platform seating and coffee shops. Use car park if you have deep pockets or are on expenses!

Reading station has recently undergone an upgrade with lots of new buildings and is now quite modern with new facilities. There are lots of machines to buy tickets but if you prefer to deal with a human being the ticket office is still there with helpful staff. With lots of information boards it's easy to find which platform you need and you are soon on your way.

A fantastic newly rebuilt train station right in the heart of Reading town centre. Clean with lots of toilets on the platform level and several convenience shops and coffee shops located around the station. Fast trains to London Paddington in only 25mins.

Navigation through the station can be a bit tricky, but it is very nice and the staff are helpful.
