Rainhill railway station, nestled in the heart of its eponymous village, is a charming and historic landmark steeped in railway history. It gained fame as the site of the 1829 Rainhill Trials, a groundbreaking competition designed to identify the most efficient and reliable locomotive for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Today, visitors can explore information boards around the station that share fascinating stories of the trials - something I highly recommended if time permits!nnNearly 200 years on, Rainhill retains its welcoming and charming spirit, epitomised by the courteous gentleman that was the station master. During a brief stopover, my family and I were greeted with helpful guidance from him, whose friendly demeanor added a personal touch to our visit.nnIf I were to nitpick however, for those accustomed to the frequent services of a major city like London, the station’s limited train schedule might pose a slight inconvenience. To avoid long waits - sometimes up to two hours - it’s advisable to check timetables in advance. Given that this scheduling issue is more a reflection on Northern Railway than the station itself, Rainhill railway station remains a delightful destination. It offers a glimpse into invaluable railway history without forgetting those who employ its services in modern times. All in all, I thoroughly recommend stopping by for a quick visit if you live in the surrounding areas!
The station staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and couldn’t do more for us, amazing. He is an example of excellent customer service. Thank you
Station staff usually very helpful at this station but pickings must have been scarse when they hired the old woman who was working yhe station today. Absolutely no people skills, raising her voice at us on the platform for no reason than we turned up as the train was coming in. Embarrassing. Five stars for the train guard who was polite and helpful and a credit to Northern Rail.

Very quiet station when I arrived. Actually, there was nobody. I wanted to ask about buying bus tickets but the desk was empty, as well.
