Awful A year or two ago I jokingly left a one star review simply stating 'awful'. Forgetting about it, many months later, I was pulled out from lessons by two senior members of staff and put under very serious, intense interrogation. A threat of expulsion from the school was implied should I not remove my review. The matter, though a minor part of my time as QES does well to highlight the key problem with the school, which is it takes itself too seriously. There is an ethos among the schools leadership that works to the detriment of providing what could be a superb education for all. Leadership's obsession with the schools image, uniform and pupils need to meet certain criteria is drilled into students and staff alike, overshadowing genuine ways to really help students excel. Students are repeatedly punished for underachieving and not meeting needlessly stringent criteria, rather than being helped to realize the best method of learning for them. For students like myself for whom academic achievement is not motivation in itself, the schools 'one size fits all' approach to education became a paradox of underachievement. Overall I enjoyed my time here, QES is a good school with great grounds, facilities, and a few really great teachers. Unfortunately it is let down by it's leadership.
This school has some real potential. The site boasts big and immaculately kept school grounds and well equipped classrooms and facilities. I left as a sixth former back in 2013 after having been there from day one of year 7. Some of the negatives about the school include: the fact that teaching and leadership staff are insanely obsessed with the school and are very very proud of the school as a result. I also feel that there are some teachers who are more professional and of a higher capability than others. I won't name any but some of them really are quite poor, making you wonder how they got past the interview process with the self-obsessed Mr Clarke. Another criticism I have is the extremely misleading and judging grading system. Students are graded each term on their overall effort in lessons, a scale of 1-5, 1 being really bad and 5 really good. Everything seems to evolve around these effort grades so if you're got anything less than a 3, you'll have your head of year on your back until the next term where the next set of effort grades are due. You will also be put on the shameful 'report' and have that down in your records. Despite those few niggles the school is still ok and the atmosphere amongst the pupils is largely good. However, I think the school would benefit from turning over a new leaf, employing some new staff sacking some old less capable staff, a rethink of the pupil grading system and a fresh ofsted report so that some experts can offer some more advice- the school must need a new ofsted soon and maybe it might only be able to scrape at a good score rather than the overrated outstanding.
QES is pretty good with regards to the actual learning. All of my teachers were very helpful and supportive throughout my time there. Left 3 years ago. However, they focus way too much on uniform and unnecessary rules. As much I appreciate the fact that they want students to look smart when representing the school, it effected your learning constantly. If they are so intent on giving you the best education possible why drag pupils out of lessons for the stupidest of reasons. Getting sent to the deputy head for having my hair in a clip instead of a plain black or green bobble is ridiculous. Not being allowed to walk around the school, enter or leave lessons or assemblies without your green fleece on was not allowed or for having plain black socks over tights when it’s cold, as it’s against school uniform policies. The rules and regulations were too much for me but apart from that teachers were nice and actual lessons were good!
The educaton my child receives from the school is good. However, this school should not be interfering in personal matters outside school. If kids want to go to the park when you close the school for subject reviews then it is their business not yours. When parents go through a divorce you should not meddle in their private affairs in the guise of child protection. Only perfect families need apply it seems.
If there was a 0 star rating that would be more appropriate for this school. Last time I wrote a review I was blackmailed to take it down or they would seek legal action, if you don’t like all the bad reviews improve the school. Extremely rude staff who refuse to deal with issues. Been trying to get an issue with students harassing me while I was at the school and after I left sorted and nothing has been done. I won’t bother trying to resolve it with qes, it will be the police.
Schools cannot charge for education provided during school hours including the supply of any materials, books, instruments or other equipment. QES won't tell you this, but I will and if you're happy to pay that's great, but some people can't or frankly don't want to. They can't treat your child any differently, or exclude them from an activity this also includes any national curriculum trips.. Now my review. This is the third as I keep getting asked to change it to a more favourable one... I have really lost what little confidence I had in this school. I am gobsmacked by their naivety. I want to work with the school for my children's well being and their education, but this is impossible when you bring up the issue of law breaking and ask them to rectify it and they say, "Actually we think parents want to pay for educational resources that should be free." I asked them to clearly state that any payments being asked for should be stated as voluntary and that financial circumstances do not need to be taken into consideration. So if a parent is asked to pay for a text book they are not obligated to do this and should not feel the need to grovel to the school claiming poverty. A simple notice on their website stating the law was all I was asking for. They said that this wasn't going to happen and it was up to the teachers how they went about getting funding for books. IT'S THE LAW and I believe that people should know it is the law. So to clarify the law I will put it here if the school do not wish to be transparent about it. School charging Education School governing bodies and local authorities, cannot charge for: • an admission application to any state funded school - paragraph 1.9 n of the ‘School Admissions Code 2012’ rules out requests for financial contributions as any part of the admissions process; • education provided during school hours including the supply of any materials, books, instruments or other equipment; • education provided outside school hours if it is part of the national curriculum , or part of a syllabus for a prescribed public examination that the pupil is being prepared for at the school, or part of religious education; • instrumental or vocal tuition, for pupils learning individually or in groups, unless the tuition is provided at the request of the pupil’s parent; • entry for a prescribed public examination, if the pupil has been prepared for it at the school; and • examination re-sits if the pupil is being prepared for the re-sits at the school . And asking reviewers to change their rating, really QES, that is a new low. To some parents you are fantastic school, but not me.
Focus less on uniform if you made the uniform more simple it would save money and a hell of a lot of hassle. The school has a lot of potential mr Houghton is one of the best teachers I've ever had, however this potential is ruined by teachers who are bad at their job, excessive uniform worries and a mass amount of hypocrisy that the school heads have. I put up a review before and was then told to take it down and sort of interrogated into saying why I did it, here's an idea if you're so desperate for positivity listen to the students more instead of keeping to your own ways. People will like the school better. Ps that Philip Howden name doesn't ring any bells at all it's clearly a teacher trying to make the school look better you can't expect us to be that stupid because realistically no one loves the school that much apart from the headteachers. If you are trying to change people's point of view via a person who doesn't exist that shows how desperate the school really is. Other schools don't have these problems because they expect people to dislike the school because they are being realistic. I could go on for quite a while about the school however I'm not going to because I'm a fair person. Mr houghtons a babe
As a former pupil still scarred, years on, by being bullied at QES I would strongly advise against sending any child to this school! Due to the bullying I was subject to no thanks to my form tutor Miss Falkhurst and head of year Mr Gaskell I had to leave school part way through 5th year meaning I left school without GSCEs. Despite being the one bullied by two sisters I was the one that was constantly persecuted by the above teachers and told "why can't you just them alone" and "if they walk in to a room you walk out". Anyone with two eyes in their head could have seen that I was the innocent party in it all! I was a meek and anxious child who weighed about 6 stone wet through and they were rough bruisers...would I honestly been the one who needed to leave anyone alone?!? As a school that apparently has a zero tolerance approach where bullying is concerned this could not be further from the truth! I have since had friends and friends children who have had similar issues that I had with bullying. Whilst I fully appreciate that bullying can occur in any school...that isn't actually the issue...the issue is how the school deal with it and unfortunately QES deal with it extremely badly and should be ashamed of themselves. If you care anything about your child's mental health I beg that you give serious consideration to sending them to QES.
Pros: - There is a nice Chinese takeaway in town, which you can visit at lunch. Cons: - The school is in love with itself to the extent that would make Narcissus think of them as strange. - There are some awful teachers that will make life very difficult. - The school markets themselves as a school with "No rules, just values", but, there actually is a long list of rules that must be followed by students. - The "Christmas assembly" is held every year, and it is one of the most tedious, madness-inducing, pointless pieces of crap that I have ever had to sit through. Conclusion: the food you can buy from the local supermarket and Chinese makes lunch times somewhat bearable, but the school's poor management, egomaniacal attitudes, awful students, and lack of professionalism made my experience with the school one that almost killed me. Do not send your children to this school if you believe it to be different to any other, I assure you, it is just as bad as the rest.
By far the worst school ive been to Had complete disregard for students well being. They were all far to absorbed in how everyones uniform looked to actually care about the well being of their students
