Quarr Abbey

Story

Quarr Abbey is a monastery between the villages of Binstead and Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight in southern England. The name is pronounced as "Kwor" . It belongs to the Catholic Order of St Benedict. The Grade I listed listed monastic buildings and church, completed in 1912, are considered some of the most important twentieth-century religious structures in the United Kingdom; Sir Nikolaus Pevsner described the Abbey as "among the most daring and successful church buildings of the early 20th century in England". They were constructed from Belgian brick in a style combining French, Byzantine and Moorish architectural elements. In the vicinity are a few remains of the original twelfth-century abbey.A community of fewer than a dozen monks maintains the monastery's regular life and the attached farm., the community provides two-month internships for young men.HistoryCistercian monasterySt. Mary's Abbey at Quarr was part of the Cistercian Order and was founded in 1132 by Baldwin de Redvers, 1st Earl of Devon, fourth Lord of the Isle of Wight. The founder was buried in the Abbey in 1155, and his remains, along with those of a royal princess, Cecily of York (died 1507), second daughter of King Edward IV of England and godmother of Henry VIII, still lie on the site of the mediaeval monastery, as do other important personages. Arreton Manor was part of the abbey from the 12th century until 1525.

I started going regularly on retreat to Quarr Abbey in 1968 until 1974 and then visited periodically until around 10 years ago. I remember with great affection monks that have long since passed away, Joseph Warrilow, Frederick Hockey and Robert Gough. Times were different, Fr Hockey used to let me milk the cows - so no "health and safety" or risk assessments in those days - oh how refreshing! Inevitably times and people including monks change and regretably it's not a place I recognise anymore, perhaps just a little too commercial for my taste and not as welcoming as I remember it being in the past. However, the important thing is that presumably another generation likes the place the way it is now, so I stand aside for them and just thank God for my times there long ago. I won't go back now preferring instead to keep the happy memories of my times there.

Beautiful abbey, with a nice atmosphere. I'm not religious, but it's a nice place for a walk and to admire the architecture (and have a coffee and cake, which were really good!)
