Portway

Story

The Portway is a major road in the City of Bristol. It is part of the A4 and connects Bristol City Centre to the Avonmouth Docks and the M5 motorway via the Avon Gorge. The road was constructed following World War I in order to provide improved access to the ports at Avonmouth Docks, which had replaced Bristol Harbour as the major local centre for commercial shipping. Upon opening on 2 July 1926, it was the single most expensive road project in Britain, costing £800,000. The construction posed a number of significant engineering challenges, including long and deep rock cuttings, a viaduct over the River Trym, and retaining walls against the gorge adjacent to the River Avon. Falling rocks have since been a problem along the Portway, particularly at the southern end close to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, with concrete canopies constructed to prevent loose rock and assist with remedial work. The Portway remains an important route to and from Bristol, and is now used as part of the Portway Park and Ride scheme. In the 21st century, the road has been regularly shut to motor traffic for maintenance, providing sporting events such as the Bristol Half Marathon, or to allow locals to enjoy a traffic-free view of the Avon Gorge.RouteThe road is about 5mi long. It starts at the junction of Bridge Valley Road and Hotwell Road below the Clifton Suspension Bridge and runs alongside the Avon Gorge, parallel to the River Avon. It passes through the suburb of Sea Mills, where it crosses the River Trym, and Shirehampton, before terminating at a roundabout in Avonmouth at a junction with the M5 motorway and A403 road.

So, I’ve used this post office 3 times... I’ve never been spoken to so rudely in my life. 1st time I was spoken to rudely by who I can assume is the owner telling me I’d been in before and messed about with parcel sizes and having a moan at me (I’d never been there in my life) 2nd time I was dealt with in a polite kind manner by a second member of staff. 3rd time (today) I was ignored for 5 minutes whilst the lady (who I assume is the owner) is playing on her phone. She then answers me, saying “she was in her own world” then refuses to take my parcels (click and drop) because “she doesn’t get paid for them” when I’ve dropped them at this post office before and many others who’ve been very helpful, the word “service” means nothing here and neither do manners. I for one will be avoiding at all costs.

I thought it would be handy having a post office nearer to where I live when we moved. To be honest Id rather walk down to town. Always long queues. The female staff will acknowledge you waiting but only when they're ready - queue or not. Everything seems to much to do - eyes rolling, huffs, puffs. First time I though Id just picked a bad day, no its every time. some one please review the staff! I just want to send things in the post for my business .... please. Thanks. I wouldn't have even given it one star.

This is a friendly neighbourhood post office, with a good stationery range, food and drink, and cute handmade earrings for sale. The lady at the counter was very helpful explaining parcel post options. A nice little shop and post office!
