Lost our things, then disposed of them... Our experience with these removers has left me feeling rather sad. They lost the box that contained our nice stainless flatware and various other kitchen things, including wine opener, cheese knives, serving spoons, measuring spoons, garlic press, etc. At first the removers insisted that we must have lost these things ourselves in the course of unpacking, but they did eventually agree to reimburse us for the costs of replacing them under the insurance policy they informed us they had to protect against loss or damage. We went ahead and replaced the items with items of similar quality, as it is not easy to get along without any flatware or other basic kitchen things! 28 days after having initially lost our box, and 11 days after we submitted our receipts for reimbursement, we received an email from Ports of Woking saying that they had found our box in their warehouse! I frankly think that if they had made a serious effort to find it earlier (rather than believing that the mistake was ours) they would have done so. We were glad to hear that our things had been found, as they included some wedding presents that we had received from friends we were fond of. We still needed to be reimbursed for the replacements, though, and we reminded the removers that that claim had been submitted. The removers sent along our reimbursement. Unfortunately, they also informed us—only after they had done so!—that they had simply “disposed of” our things! Apparently, they were sufficiently determined that we not benefit in any way from their mistake of losing our belongings that they thought we deserved to have to choose between losing £300 and giving up on having wedding gifts returned. Not that they even warned us that they were planning to make us make that choice. I don’t know whether they simply binned our pretty stuff or took it home to use themselves, but I feel sad every time I think about it. If it would have made them feel better to get the replacement stuff back, they could have asked us for it. But to simply throw away or take our belongings was really inappropriate. We did have one other problem with these movers. When they reassembled our bed (which has a mechanism for tipping up to reveal a storage area underneath), these removers left out two structurally important pieces. When they realized their mistake, they put the pieces under the bed instead of telling us about them. My husband and I discovered the pieces and reassembled the bed a day later. I don’t think this situation was well handled either.
