I wasn't really interested in the topic of the Museum, I honestly went there just because it was a part of the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. But wow, the amount of interesting things they were able to pack in that tiny space was stunning. I just quickly went through, but from what I saw, if you are interested in the topic, it's a worth-it visit. And even if not, I recommend giving it at least 5 minutes, or just visiting the second floor, they have the biggest collection of weapons I ever saw, from some kinds of stones, through boomerangs, to modern weapons. It's gonna be worth it :
Wonderful museum. Their catalog has items from all over the world. Each piece tells a story about a time, culture and people. Moreover, they do acknowledge the colonial and imperial history of the museum. Some artifacts were collected against the will of the indigenous people and draconian means were used. They also sell some good souvenirs.
This place is where the weird and wonderful go to take rest!! The most interesting artifacts I think I've ever seen inside a museum. The space itself is really awesome, I felt like I was in a movie and Indiana Jones may pop out from behind a cabinet at any moment. Really take your time in here. Look in and around things as there is so much to see. I especially liked the different masks, being a horror movie buff you can see where inspiration has come from in these sometimes unsettling masks. One could easily spend all day in there so leave plenty of time for your visit.
Absolutely brilliant! Second time we have been and spent the whole day there myself and 3 children aged 15, 11 and 9. The displays are interesting and the wooden mouse hunt kept my youngest entertained. The staff are very friendly, helpful and very inclusive/disability aware. Thank you so much!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Great that you can access via history museum. Fascinating history of repressed people. Colonialism at its worst/best. Weapons, clothing, boats, decorations, and so much more all displayed in an accessible way. Lift as well as stairs. Easy for all.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We come here very often, a great place to learn and entertain children but also adults. Live creatures upstairs, world historical items at the back. There's a cafe, a shop, and clean toilets. Currently under huge renovation, so entrance to the museum can be a bit different to find.
You should go if you're visiting the excellent attached natural history museum. Less is more and they clearly don't understand that. Plenty of really interesting items but it just felt like walking through an antique store. Cool but no substance. In the natural history museum they talk about how they changed the exhibits around from just being rows and rows of stuff to instead telling a story with the items they have and only displaying the really good stuff that conveys something interesting. In Pitt rivers it's just tons of stuff that doesn't tell a story or hook you in. I would recommend going to the top floor and looking through all the weapons. That floor was quite good. I specifically liked looking at the European swords. Just a case with a bunch of swords from europe with information about each of them. Would love to know about the battles they fought in or a human story attached to them.
Steeped in history, this place needs a few hours to explore and discover what's on display. Friendly staff, and lots to see. Bear in mind that the display cabinets are quite close together so getting around, especially if it is busy, may not be as easy as you'd like. It's free to.enter but take a fiver with you as a donation to keep the place going. Not much parking close by so recommend doing park and ride.
Very interesting, amazing the quantity of items in there ! The last floor with all the weaponry is very nice to walk around and see the evolution. Lots of musical/artistic elements also too see what was used around the world and ages. Theere are drawers under the display with even more objects, it seems impossible to see it all in a day. Only issue when we came was the elevator not working. Maybe it lacks a bit of detailed explanation by item ?
Incredibly wide ranged and interesting museum. Very informative and educational. Quite confusing to go around in but it was very interesting. Loved it. It is based on colonisation artefacts. Artefacts are also grouped in object groups such as rings or necklaces or spears, not tribes or years. There's a lot of artefacts on all kinds of subjects from cultures and tattoos to dolls and masks. It's the perfect place to go to if you want to learn more about foreign cultures and the colonisation of them. I cannot recommend it enough!! I'm definitely going again with friends and family.
