I saw Dean Anthony several times on the NHS as I was having significant pain related to problems with my sacroiliac joint. He told me that as my MRI scan was normal there was nothing wrong and my body was just “over generating” pain signals. All I needed to do was return to regular exercise and the problems would go away. I followed his advice for a couple of months but got worse. I explained that the pain was becoming more severe and widespread but he stuck with the same diagnosis and didn’t bother to undertake any further investigation. I decided to see a different physiotherapist who was able to identify the problem within a few minutes of examining me – damage to one of the ligaments in my right sacroiliac joint. Under the care of the other physiotherapist, my symptoms gradually improved. In terms of Dean’s knowledge of appropriate physiotherapy exercises, I asked him in one of my appointments if he could recommend an exercise to strengthen my abdominals. He suggested lunges. Now, whilst there is obviously some use of abdominal muscles in lunges, their primary function is to strengthen the legs and buttocks. Lunges are also not an appropriate exercise to prescribe to someone with severe back pain! It was at this point that I decided to go to a different physiotherapist instead. There are many good physiotherapists in the Warrington area but Dean is not one of them. Please use your money wisely and go elsewhere.
