I’ve been in here 3 times in the last couple of months since moving to the area and won’t be returning. I feel I need to leave a detailed review as Head Office need to intervene with the management of the manager and his team. Firstly to say they are not all bad, there is a blond lady who is maybe in her 30s I’m not good judging age who has more maturity and understands the concept of providing a friendly service to the public, and there is one younger brown haired lady who is also friendly. However the rest I came into contact with are not only in need of soft skill training but animal welfare and pet licensing training also. On my last visit I watched the aggressive way in which fish were caught. Granted there was a queue however they are living beings and it wasn’t a long queue so people can wait. The chap bagged the fish without asking the customer if they were happy with the fish which from what I could see was potentially injured. He didn’t even look at the fish in the bag himself before placing the bag into a brown bag. I used to work in a fish shop in my Uni days, and not locally, you always check the fish then show the fish to the customer in the bag to check they are happy with them. He seemed flustered. Not surprised and doubt the fish will have survived. If a fish was struggling I’d place it back in the tank and choose another one for the customer, I wouldn’t send the customer home with a fish in shock. This was my last visit and I won’t be returning. On the visit prior I saw a customer given incorrect policy information. They were enquiring about a reduced item when I was behind them in the queue. The stores have discretion, I know this from buying a reduced item myself in the store in my old town St Albans, there is a process of negotiation that can take place. In this instance the member of staff said it’s up to the manager, the manager barked at the member of staff they’d be fired if they discounted it further and said he has no discretion - he stated it’s a fixed discount from the online price dictated by head office. I now see why the staff seem flustered and nervous, if that’s how he treats them. He is very unfriendly in his whole demeanour. On my final visit the item was still there so completely pointless him standing his ground. Going back to my first visit I was looking for a fish tank to replace an old one I already have. However the guy I spoke to didn’t seem interested in serving me. That was a mistake as I bought a Roma 125 the next day. I found a few really good aquarium shops in the Harlow area, worth the drive as the local shops are not up to much. These are small hobbyist shops I’d recommend checking out: Roydon Hamlet Water Garden Centre for goldfish and tropical, Lee Valley Aquatics for tropical. It’s worth the drive as the fish are well cared for and appropriately quarantined. The tanks are always clean, have proper decor so the fish feel more comfortable, and the water is crystal clear. I have no connection to these shops, I just don’t like any of the local shops so thought this may be helpful to others.
A very well stocked store with a polite, professional and helpful team in our experience. Not our local store, but we'd happily travel for the convenience and service.
I've bought nothing here but fell in love with one of their rats. All the animals are in clean and well kept areas and store staff are very helpful.
Staff are rude, arrogant and racist. Concerned for animal welfare here. They will say wrong things & make your pets ill to make money.
A fine pet supplies shop for my puppy that stocks food, treats fun toys medications and vitamins under one roof. The staff are friendly too.
Cashier I dealt with v friendly and made my return v easy. Other cashier seemed very unfriendly and curt.
Friendly, helpful staff, who are all very well informed, able and willing to give advice. Slight struggles with stock levels at the moment, but that is true of so many shops.
Dog food was cheaper at the till than on the shelf edge label and no queue which always helps.
Bought a hamster today, very kind staff, gentlemen who was helping us explained everything, great service. We bought put fishes and hamster.
I would like to thank Darren who has provided me with exceptional customer service. He was very polite, welcoming and patient. He greeted us in store with a smile on his face which made me and my sister feel very welcomed and comfortable. He possesses a remarkable amount of knowledge about the animals kept in the store and expresses his information in a very polite manner, pausing every now and again to allow us to ask questions inbetween. You can tell this young man is very dedicated and motivated by his work and his speech reflects his passion for animals. I have myself also previously worked within retail in many successful businesses in Canary Wharf, westminister and camden and I have never witnessed such a patient and polite individual within retail. His positive attitude, conduct and demeanour left a very good impression on me and my sister, in which we decided to make pets at home borehamwood our first pets at home branch to visit instead of another branch where we live around. Exceptional service!!!!! He deserves a raise!!!!
