Had a brilliant day at Patterson's Spade Mill, James was wonderful showing us around. There was so much to see and do, the coal forges and the massive gas forge. The hydraulic power hammers were amazing to watch as the blacksmiths worked on shaping billets of steel. Would definitely recommend a visit to this fantastic place.
This is a little known national trust property. Well worth a visit. You’ll never look at a spade again in the same way. This place is lucky to still be here so do support it. It is believed to be the last one in all of Europe! The guides know their stuff and the demonstrations will show you what life in a spade mill was like over a hundred heads ago, little has changed. The mill includes the original race which powers the water turbine.
Amazing stop on our trip round northern Ireland. Small but fascinating. Lots to see and the staff are really friendly.
Fascinating tour and demonstration of spade making. Think hot metal and massive hammers. Friendly, knowledgeble staff and volunteers. Bear in mind: this is one of the smaller NT properties so doesn't have a cafe.
Loved it so much. Actually seeing a spade forged in front of us using the water wheel. Guides great fun and full of knowledge. Bought a spade too!
Spent a day volunteering here to help it get into shape for reopening post covid. Have to say it's such a nice place with a lot of interesting old machinery. Definitely interested in coming back for a smithing class!
Really interesting spot, a now a regular visitor whenever guests from England come to visit. It's just a pity that it doesn't open all year round. Takes about 2 hours to go round with the guided tour. Enter into the past and see a blacksmith at work. Visit the mill race and see the water wheel turn. While you are waiting for the tour to begin, watch an interesting video of the mill's past. 100% enjoyable.
I loved this place and found it really fascinating and unique. The tour guides and spadesmiths were very knowledgeable and were excellent at sharing this knowledge in an interesting and entertaining way. This is probably my favourite NT building visit yet!
I was not expecting much when we decided to come here but was really surprised they gave us a really good demonstration of how spades are made in the mill. It's a real demonstration of old engineering which is fantastic. Really nice people work there as well.
Wonderful place to spend a few hours and great people too!
