I stayed at the campsite from 13th - 17th June. Had a great time there. Such a good location, great facilities and most importantly, best campsite service I have had. The staffs were so nice and really think and arrange things while considering the best for the campers! Definitely recommend to everyone.
We spent two nights here in a two-person tent. Great space and indoor facilities. A pleasant 15minute walk into town.
Great location with spacious pitches for tents and campers. Electricity is available as a booking option. Close to the main road for travel links via car, bus, or 15 minute walk along to the harbourside.
I am incredibly disappointed with the Orkney Caravan park, but specifically in the service that I received from Carol. My first interaction with her was when I checked in. I had traveled all day and was tired, and she asked me if I had made a reservation. I said, “I don’t think so,” and she scoffed, “ha ha, either you have or you haven’t.” I assumed she was joking, but I still thought It was an unnecessary thing to say. After I booked, I went to walk out when something from my backpack got caught on a door handle. After I released it, she said “that is a liability, you need to do something about that.” She said this to me like I was a child that would be lost without her advice. This had never happened before, and I found the comment incredibly patronizing, but I was tired, so I left it, and walked to my campsite.nnNow for the main event. I have a tent that needs to be tied to a tree to stay upright. I know it’s unusual, but I made it myself as I’m too tall to fit in most tents, and larger tents are too heavy to carry. I have used it before and had 0 issues with anyone about its dependence on being tied to a tree. I actually get a lot of compliments about the simplicity of its design.nnI was enjoying staying at the park and wanted to pay for another 2 nights. As I was talking to the lovely Scottish girl in the office, carol popped out of nowhere. “Yeah, we’re going to need you to move that tent because we don’t want it tied to a tree,” she said, in the most condescending tone. “Ok” I said back, ignoring her attitude. Even though I had already said yes, she continued, “we can’t have everyone tying things to trees, now can we?” I should make it clear that she was talking to me like she was a teacher in a primary school, and I was a student. Her continued comments were especially bizarre as I had already agreed to move it.nnBut she continued still, this time criticizing my tent, “Who had a tent that isn’t free standing anyway?” she said in disbelief. “I do,” I said back, trying to hide my agitation. She continued to criticize my tent and then left. I paid for another couple nights, but I’d had enough of her attitude, so I followed her into the next room to let her know how I felt.nn“That was really patronizing,” I said, “I really don’t appreciate how you just spoke to me.” This was the opportunity to apologise, but she doubled down and continued to criticize my tent. “I just can’t believe your tent isn’t free standing,” she scoffed and then started walking away. As she was leaving I said something sarcastic like, “the service here is amazing,” and hearing that, she yelled, “we have a SIGN that says you CAN’T tie things to trees!”nnI proceeded to walk around the grounds and found no such sign. I walked back into the office, found carol, and asked her to direct me to this “sign” that I should have seen prior to erecting my tent. She took me to a notice board, and in the bottom corner was an A4 printed piece of paper that said “please don’t hang things from trees, the branches are weak.”nnI proceeded to tell her how this had absolutely nothing to do with me as I wasn’t hanging anything and had tied my tent to the trunk, when she started walking away from me. I told her how rude she was being to me and she said nothing back and continued on her way. I was quite upset and disappointed and didn’t want to stay there any longer, when I saw a man that looked like he had some sort of authority in the park. I explained to him what had happened, he sided with me, and apologised for how she had acted. This was great, but what I really needed was an apology from carol.nnI was in the campsite for a few more days and waited for her to approach me about the incident, but she didn’t. All I can say is that I am incredibly disappointed with carols behavior, and it really tainted my whole experience in the park. The facilites were nice, the other staff members were lovely, but carol was, to put it bluntly, awful. She needs another job that doesn’t require coming into contact with people. If not, a primary school teacher would suit her well.
Superb campsite that was an absolute joy to use. Came highly recommended by 2 fellow bikers I met with on the ferry over. Immaculately cared for site and facilities with everything you'd expect of a top notch site. Within easy reach of shops and Kirkwall is only a 10 minute walk away. 10/10.
