By far the BEST sushi experience in London - the flavor layering and presentation are an absolute delight to the senses. The staff is so knowledgeable and service is always impeccable, we always leave feeling over the moon! My husband and I have tried sushi all over the world and in many places in London, but we keep coming to Oliver Maki as it never fails to impress. It is clear that the ingredients used are very high in quality and each item ordered is treated like a masterpiece and brought on its own, giving it the attention it deserves and allowing you to be really mindful while eating. There's so much passion and expertise in the food created. We always go there to celebrate special occasions.
Our experience at Oliver Maki can be defined by the balanced and surprising combinations of flavours, as well as a great appreciation to rethink traditional ingredients into new dishes with masterful presentations. Although its true that its an expensive restaurant, one must bear in mind that this kind of restaurant belongs to the “fine food” category, thus, prices do not only answer to high quality ingredients and skilled preparation, but also to the research behind each dish. Bonus points for the hand-made matcha udon, exquisite. That being said, it was quite surprising to realize that the decoration of the place was not much of a priority at least in the main hall, as we didn’t see the room upstairs, which in this kind of places usually is defined by an aurea of sophistication to accompany the high end meal. However in this case, the place looked like any other asian place with barely no hints on the top characterization of its cuisine. Also part of our overall good experience was ONE of the staff girl with glasses, thanks, who was really nice and helpful during the dinner. The rest of the staff was not even nice at all. TL;DR: Nice place, expensive, worth trying, matcha noodles and the “tara” maki.
Oliver Many is a place you must go. I love japanese food and at Oliver Maki you can tray an amazing dishes. Oliver Maki is definitely a place I would recommend to everyone who love to live a food experience based in quality products and superb presentations. I have been there several times and it's always a new experience, there is always something to supervise me. As Spanish I really love to see how they are playing with some Mediterranean flavours through japanese food.
Founded by brothers Oliver and Amer Zeitoun, this is the first branch outside the Middle East, with five restaurants already thriving across Kuwait and Bahrain when they first opened their doors in London in 2016. The idea at its heart is to combine traditional Japanese dishes with flavours from around the world, with a particularly strong influence taken from the founders’ Mediterranean origins. The drinks menu at Oliver Maki is vast, with a fantastic selection of wines, sakes and cocktails. We chose a cocktail each to kick off our evening – the Super Berry Fizz: Berry Cocktail Juice & Champagne and Mediterranean G&T: Gin, Mediterranean Tonic, Olives, Rosemary, Peach Liqueur, Citrus Bitters. Both of the cocktails were wonderfully refreshing, strong and zingy. Purists beware: this is not a classic Asian dining experience. Authenticity is cheerfully side-stepped here in favour of experimentation, fun and – most importantly – taste. The dishes are recognisably Japanese, but with a definite twist; foie gras, ribs and tacos all make appearances throughout the menu. Even the sushi is a little different, with brown rice being used rather than white, and beetroot shavings replacing nori in some of the rolls. We ordered a generous selection of maki dishes including Ebi Nigiri and Salmon Nigiri, a few vegetarian options and some sides to share between us including some delicious Edamame Yuzu & Ponzu. When our dishes arrived it was clear that the minimalist decor around us was to allow the food to really stand out. Each platter brought to our table was visually stunning – the attention to detail and dramatic flair in the presentation made us both very excited to tuck in! Importantly, quality is definitely not overlooked here in favour of presentation: the fish was clearly of a very high standard – the tuna was particularly fresh, meaty and delicious. The Volcano Maki was particularly stunning – the brown rice gave the sushi a satisfyingly nutty taste, and flavours and textures were all played with in unusual ways. From the crunchy topping to the sweet, spicy sauce it was bathing in, each bite was a real experience. While still enjoyable, we were less blown away by the Tofu Burger Maki. Vegetarian sushi is challenging to make as exciting as the fish, and though it was just as visually pleasing, it was not as flavourful as the other dishes on our table. A firm favourite was the Chicken in Plum Sauce – we were told that this is one of their most popular items and the founder’s personal favourite! and we could definitely see why. Succulent tasty chicken in a delicious but not overpowering plum sauce. We were also sold on the Spicy Shrimp tempura tacos. Crispy, a little spicy, and oddly comforting, this was definitely the dish I would come back for. Finally the Braised Smoked Short Ribsjust melted in your mouth! Being located in the midst of food-mad Soho, there is little margin for error for Oliver Maki, and the menu certainly delivers. The focus at Oliver Maki is on the cuisine, with innovative, beautifully crafted dishes that both surprised and satisfied us. A great Japanese restaurant in Soho that I will certainly return to.
Upscale sushi joint with lots of twisted, some work some just don't. Located in Soho area, Friday night, and the restaurant wasn't that packed. The menu is a bit confusing in the beginning and it takes time to get used to it. Portions are big and usually enough to share. We tried a mixture of different options... Some good some failed....
Some of the best sushi that i have ever had. The food looked like pieces of artwork. Highly recommended
Oliver Maki is a very trendy and romantic spot for Japanese cuisine. The service was also exceptional. Even though it's a bit pricey, the food and ambience is well worth it. We ordered sushi and appetizers; it was so beautifully crafted, it was almost a shame to eat! This place is worth checking out if you're thinking of trying a new sushi spot.
Great place to have some high quality, delicious brown rice sushi! Amazing selection - lots of healthy options. Food is brought out slowly, one dish at a time, making it perfect to practice those mindful eating techniques. Nothing bland and no hiding behind unhealthy cooking methods. Just great quality ingredients and outstanding flavors here. Love that the waiters explain each item so you know what you're about to enjoy - very friendly service! You leave feeling very satisfied but not overly stuffed. Highly recommended.
My girlfriend took me here for my surprise birthday dinner and i didn't expect the tiramisu birthday surprise planned by one of your waiter/s. It was a very memorable moment, the service there alone made me left with a smile, please give them my thanks. Even got a free Oliver Maki umbrella for my birthday gift by them as we left as it was raining outside. The staffs were all very friendly and helpful : The food was nice and had very strong flavours to it and very different to traditional Japanese food however it is nice and special to have a change as most Japanese restaurants taste the same. Each of the food presentation has its own very unique way carefully laid out and was very pretty to look at.
When I ate here I left feeling happy and full-- not something that happens often for a vegan when you eat at regular restaurants. The menu is diverse and accommodating for different dietary requirements and the contemporary Japanese fusion concept is presented really fantastically. I especially recommend the tofu burger maki and the tofu tacos!! The dishes were presented so beautifully that I was tempted to snap a picture of each one. What I liked most of all was how creative the dishes and combinations were, and I am happy to have been introduced to the new flavours I found there. The service was lovely too and the upstairs seating area was beautiful..will definitely come back.
