Old College, located at the heart of the University of Edinburgh, is an architectural gem steeped in history and academic tradition. Built in the 18th century, its grand facade and imposing towers command attention, serving as a symbol of the university's prestige and heritage. The interior boasts stunning architectural details, including ornate ceilings, majestic staircases, and intricate woodwork, providing an inspiring backdrop for learning and research. However, some visitors may find certain areas in need of restoration or modernization to meet contemporary academic needs. Overall, Old College stands as a testament to the university's rich legacy and remains a cherished landmark in Edinburgh's historic skyline.
Public access to the gallery. Lots of nice photo opportunities away from the chaos of Nicolson Street. At some point in August the Fringe Festival takes over the central area for a few days and it gets packed. Much nicer at any other time.
A wonderful evocative building with an austere inner court. It’s a short walk from the busy tourist center. It’s a short visit as it is a working university. But you can rest for a bit here and admire the beautiful architecture.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Absolutely beautiful place. I can't imagine having a lecture here. It is filled with history and feel peacefull amidst the hustle once one walks to the main road. It is a must visit!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
The Old College is the oldest remaining part of the University of Edinburgh, having been founded as the “Tounis College” in 1583 by James VI. It’s now Scotland’s largest university, with nearly 20,000 full-time students. The architecture of the Old College is a marvelous piece of work and was tastefully designed by leading Georgian architect Robert Adam. The most striking feature of the main building is the dome, added in 1887. It bears a gilded bronze statue of a youth bearing the torch of knowledge and is affectionately nicknamed the ‘Golden Boy’. The entry arches look quite grand in scale even though they lack color and detail. To get a better sense of the building, be sure to wander into the internal quadrangle.

Absolute icon of Edinburgh's skyline and of the university. The architectural style is breathtaking and I often pop in just to have a stroll round the courtyard. Keep an eye out for golden boy atop the dome.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
