Old Calton Burial Ground

Story

The Old Calton Burial Ground is a graveyard at Calton Hill, in Edinburgh, Scotland, to the north-east of the city centre. The burial ground was opened in 1718, and is the resting place of several notable Scots, including philosopher David Hume, scientist John Playfair, rival publishers William Blackwood and Archibald Constable, and clergyman Dr Robert Candlish. It is also the site of the Political Martyrs' Monument, an obelisk erected to the memory of a number of political reformers, and Scotland's American Civil War Memorial. The burial ground was altered following the construction of Waterloo Place in 1819, which divided the graveyard into two sections. Along with Edinburgh's other historic graveyards, Old Calton is managed by City of Edinburgh Council. The burial ground, including screen walls, and its monuments are protected as a category A listed building.HistoryThe villagers of Calton, a village at the western base of Calton Hill, buried their dead at South Leith Parish Church. This was so inconvenient that, in 1718, the Society of the Incorporated Trades of Calton bought a half acre of ground at a cost of £1013 from Lord Balmerino, the feudal superior of the land, for use as a burial ground for the village. Permission was granted for an access road, originally known as High Calton and now the street called Calton Hill, up the steep hill from the village to the burial ground.

This cemetery is the resting place of several notable Scots, including philosopher David Hume, scientist John Playfair and rival publishers William Blackwood. You will find a very informative information about the history of the cemetery in the signs inside.
Step back in time to 17O0s where you will find the resting place of Edinburgh’s architects merchants, scientists etc -there is a statue of president Abraham Lincoln commemorating the Scot’s who fought in the American civil war - the graveyard is slightly unkempt but worth viewing
Such beautiful graveyard, would of liked more information about what happened to those graves that where lost when the road was made, looks like it also is another ground with a watch tower but couldn't see how to get near it
Small but very old burial ground tucked away in the centre of Edinburgh. Full of history and always worth a visit.
Original went there in the dark with a guided Monsters and Myths tour of Edinburgh but I returned in the daylight to have a better look. I find cemeteries very calming, the sun was shining and the air was crisp. This cemetery contains the graves of prominent Atheist David Hume and a well known statue of President Abraham Lincoln. If it's a clear day this burial ground is a small but interesting treat.
The Old Calton Burial Ground is a graveyard on Waterloo Street and most likely you'll be walking past this on the way to climbing Calton Hil. The burial ground is the resting place of several notable Scots, including philosopher David Hume, John Playfair, plus a whole bunch of people even fellow Scots have never heard of. Apart from this, the cemetery is also the site of the Political Martyrs' Monument, Scotland's American Civil War Memorial and the statue of AbrahamLincoln. Worth a small detour if you're in the city and want to visit the hill.
Really enjoyed the history behind it all, its interesting to explore and actually really enjoyed it, the old Carlton cemetery is known for some of the famous people that were buried there such as philosopher David Hume, scientist John Playfair, rival publishers William Blackwood and Archibald Constable, and clergyman Dr Robert Candlish. I would really recommend for anyone to go see the historical place!
I’ve never been to such a epic cemetery like that.
Very interesting cemetery with some notable graves and memorials
