Story

The Moor of Rannoch is a restaurant with rooms situated beside Rannoch Station on the West Highland Railway Line. Surrounded by the rugged landscape of Rannoch Moor covering some 130km2. Often described as one of the last true wildernesses in Europe, the area is a vast stretch of land composed of blanket bog, lochans, rivers and rocky outcrops.

The Moor of Rannoch is a warm cosy retreat offering a chance to relax, unwind & recharge. It is perfect for those wishing a haven from the fast paced modern world or equally adventurous explorers keen to sample this unique part of the Scottish landscape.

We do not have any TV’s or internet access and there are no phones in the guest rooms. Mobile phone reception also varies from very poor to non existent. To make up for this we have a large selection of books, games and jigsaws and the lounges feature open fires and wood burning stoves. There is also a good range of Malt Whisky to help pass the evenings.

My wife and I stayed at the Rannock Hotel on the recommendation of our two friends who had stayed there before, were not disappointed! small and very comfortable the owners Steph and Scot could not be more welcoming as for the food without question could not be faulted. Will I hope to go again next year and see the wonderful view's and the deer outside the restaurant while enjoying a fantastic breakfast.

Wife and I needed a Getaway after several months of hard work and grind. Moor of Rannoch was just what we needed. Great food, comfortable surroundings and looked after by a pair of lovely, knowledgable and interesting hosts. Close to some great walks, charming railway backdrop and the feeling of isolation which we both love. We found it the perfect place to unwind, get outdoors and spoil ourselves all in 36 hours. I would sum it up personally as somehow managing to find the best bits about a michelin star restaurant, a boutique hotel and a youth hostel and amalgamate them into one. Classy, friendly and relaxing. Would recommend travelling by train to get into the feel of the place but certainly not essential as we took the car and found it great. Many thanks to you both for a weekend to repeat! Andrew and Katie Shepherd

From reading the reviews on the Moor of Rannoch it seemed impossible that this hotel could live up to its reputation. From the first point of contact though, Scott and Steph were the perfect hosts. Meeting us from the Station late into the evening and walking the short walk to the hotel, showing us to our room and inviting us to a drink and cheese at the bar. If you are looking to escape the chain hotels with artificial service quality and predefined restaurant menus this is definitely the place you have been looking for. The hotel sits high up on the moor of Rannoch overlooking two gorgeous unspoilt lochs with views (at our time anyway) of snow-capped mountains. It is immaculate with no stone left unturned to make your stay as comfortable as possible. There is a small library area with all the maps, books, guides etc. together with Scott’s incredible knowledge of the local area and the most up to date information on condition of roads, paths etc. We had brought our bikes on the train to do road cycling with the hotel being close to the beautiful Etape de Caledonia route, but there are also plentiful mountain biking trails and walking opportunities too. There are also bikes to hire. With the unsurpassed natural beauty of the area and the lovely warm service in the hotel it would be hard to think of anything to improve the break, but Steph’s food achieved that, its exquisite. Breakfasts are nothing short of superb and the daily changing dinner menus perfect, using a balance of local produce together with amazing quality and perfect (even after a day outdoors adventuring) sized meals. You would find it hard to better the food even in top expensive restaurants. In summary, if you like to spend your time wandering aimlessly buying things you don’t need in a faceless shopping mall you won’t like it here. If you love natural beauty, amazing food, fantastic service with peace and time to reflect, l wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and location.
