"We are a friendly, family run restaurant & pub on the outskirts of Barnsley, housed in a stunning medieval old watermill built in 1150AD, steeped in history. We serve traditional British food along side dishes inspired from other parts of the world. We have a good selection of lagers, bottled and draught ales including Blue Moon and of course Guinness, gins, cocktails, wine list, ciders, plenty to choose from!We have a beautiful dog friendly large beer garden to the rear with a play area for your small humans! We serve food and drinks inside our stunning restaurant or outside weather dependant, but you don’t have to be dining with us, you are more than welcome to pop in for a drink. Have a wonder over to our Facebook page "

I haven't been to this place since 5+ years ago when it was under a different name and management. Back then it was okay, but I weren't in any rush to return. After seeing some nice reviews lately, we thought we'd give it a go. The building is beautifully presented, you genuinely feel like you're stepping back in time. The food is decently priced, with 15% off the entire bill on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which is a treat. It isn't the longest food menu in world, but what it lacks in variety, it certainly makes up for in quality. If the menu changes seasonally throughout the year, I'll certainly become be a regular. Quality wise, you couldn't really fault the food at all. The chef seems to know what they're doing and takes pride in the food being served. There's not a lot of Vegetarian options, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be an issue to swap a couple things out to make them Veg friendly. There's a decent selection of drinks on which are fairly priced, including some local spirits and beers too. The main up for me was the Fallen Angel rum A premium spirit and perfect nightcap. The main highlight was the staff. It's a rare delight to get enthusiastic, attentive and genuinely happy staff in most places around Barnsley. The waitress seemed to love her job and making sure everyone was happy. She'd chat to people after their meals and seemed legitimately interested in the people and what they had to say. We will certainly be back. Thank you!
Visited 10th February. Overall very good and will visit again, just one criticism mentioned below. Very warm and friendly waitress and fellow staff were too. Had belly pork for my starter, it was delicious but wished the piece was slightly bigger as my Dad had the Jack Daniel's chicken that was a very substantial starter and was also tasty. The 3 mains were steak and ale pie 5/5 great size, Lamb Shank 5/5 and I had the beef wellington. The dish was lovely however my only disappointment was the fillet was very well done, I was expecting it medium rare. It was mentioned when settling the bill but advised that's how it come, if so this should have been mentioned when ordering. Also the wellington dish could have done with a bit more root vegetables with it as it had plenty of mash and beautiful rich red wine gravy so would have been good for balance.
Lovely meal, had starters and main courses for 2. Only took photos of mains as the starters looked so good that we just tucked in! Halloumi starter and belly pork which were both amazing. Chicken sharwarma and chicken supreme for main were really good couldn't fault it. Service very good 2 staff who were very attentive, friendly and efficient. We will go back and next time hopefully have room for dessert. Also got 15% off so brilliant value for money.
Such a beautiful little pub! Food was amazing! Beef was cooked to perfection. Love that even though it is quite an intimate bar the seating is spread out far enough so your not sat right on the next tables knee. Lovely atmosphere and the staff were lovely! The lady that served us was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. Star of the place is the food everything was cooked beautifully. Nice pint too! Cant praise the place enough and would recommend and definitely return!
It's an historical place turn restaurant, claims to be the oldest Pub in england, it's very cosy and I love the unusual ambience there. The food was tasty and well plated, the service there was top-notch, those who attended to usmy husband and I were really pleasant and friendly. We had a three course meal but we were filled and couldn't have dessert. The bill was worth it, I'll say affordable luxury dinning. I absolutely loved dining there.
What a discovery!!! This place is truly awesome! The whole look and feel of the restaurant is warm, welcoming and full of charm. It's got an authentic feel too, in keeping with its history. In terms of the food itself, it was faultless. All three courses were well presented, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. The menu has a series of numbers by each item. When I enquires what they were, I was advised that it related to contents, so you could avoid any allegy-related dishes. They can provide a key to the numbers if required. To cap it all, the staff were so friendly, welcoming and attentative. It's a small, family run business, and really really shows. All the staff genuinely care, and want to create the best experience for their customers. On Wednesdays and Thursdays they even offer a 15% discount as long as you purchase a main course. Even without that, the bill was reasonably priced. Can't recommend this place high enough, and will definitely be returning.....and I hear the Sunday lunch is worth a try too!!
Fantastic time, atmosphere, lovely staff and amazing food. Our steaks AMAZING! Definitely will come back and definitely soon.
Went on a birthdays celebration meal on recommendations from friends. From walking in we were welcomed by great staff, the surroundings are amazing and history surrounds you. Service was swift, professional and friendly. OK onto the main point of going to this place in particular, The food is amazing I started with the belly pork. Boom knocked out of the ground and then onto the beef wellington, absolutely magnificent! I don’t like parsnips, I do now!. If you are looking for great food in a great place “the Monk” is the place to try, we will be returning.
Booked for Sunday lunch, the gentleman on the phone was very friendly polite and professional. The Sunday lunch was superb, everything was cooked to perfection and the portions were good, there is an option for extra meat but there was plenty on the normal size, would love to have had a dessert as they looked lovely but couldn't manage one. All the staff were friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was very relaxed. We will be returning and have and would recommend. Would honestly say one of the best Sunday lunches iv had out in a long time. Parking: Large carpark
The building itself is steeped in history dating back hundreds of years. The food was first class with service to match. We were sat in an area with two other groups of people, all total strangers, but we chatted together like old friends, making for a great atmosphere. Loved it, first time we have been but will definitely be visiting again.
