Middle Temple Hall

Story

The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, commonly known simply as Middle Temple, is one of the four Inns of Court exclusively entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers, the others being the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. It is located in the wider Temple area of London, near the Royal Courts of Justice, and within the City of London.HistoryIn the 13th century, the Inns of Court originated as hostels and schools for student lawyers. The Middle Temple is the western part of "The Temple", the headquarters of the Knights Templar until they were dissolved in 1312. The Temple Church still stands as a "peculiar" (extra-diocesan) church of the Inner and Middle Temples. The Inns stopped being responsible for legal education in 1852, although they continue to provide training in areas such as advocacy and ethics for students, pupil barristers and newly qualified barristers. Most of the Inn is occupied by barristers' offices, known as chambers. One of the Middle Temple's main functions now is to provide education and support for new members to the profession. This is done through advocacy training, the provision of scholarships (over £1 million in 2011), subsidised accommodation both in the Temple and in Clapham, and by providing events where junior members may meet senior colleagues for help and advice.

What a beautiful place that inspired Harry Potter. We were lucky enough to have a private tour so we could explore this beautiful hall. The ornate wood, portraits of Queen Elizabeth, the long head table custom built for the room and so many other things to see. Worth a trip there if you’re in London.
One of the four Inns of court. For those interested in the legal history of the country it is really a special place to walk around. Get a reservation for lunch. The grand hall is one of the spaces which inspired the great hall in Harry Potter. The lunches here are everyday and historic. A couple scenes from Shakespeare take place here since he used to attend lunches here. For example, when I was there a US Supreme Court Justice happened to be in town for lunch.
We visited as part of Open Spaces Garden weekend! And the gardens are definitely worth a visit. Beautiful spaces, well kept oasis in middle of City.
Middle Temple Hall is a gorgeous space. Established in 1576, you can definitely feel its history. I loved the carved, oak beam ceilings, stained glass windows, and antique paintings of eminent lawyers who were once members of Inner Temple. It felt like being in an Oxbridge college. Nowadays, it's an event space for events. But I believe it is open for hire so if you're looking to organise/host a professional work event dining, lectures, music etc, this is the best place. There's not much else you can do here. But it's an architectural beauty and a fine example of 16th-century English design. Well worth visiting just to marvel at this gorgeous space.
We dined in the Middle Temple Hall today for lunch. What an experience to dine in a hall over 400 years old. What a splendid setting and such a friendly and helpful welcome from the staff. So very reasonably priced, a small but good selection for the menu to choose from and it changes daily. It was easy to book and unlike so many similar places members of the public can book to dine here for many dates. The Middle Temple and Inner Temple are also such delightful heritage places to explore. In the past I have been on a tour around the buildings and such a fascinating part of London to learn about.
Middle Temple Hall is astonishing and full of history. It's open for tours.
Middle Temple building is such a Classic piece of art,i was really impressed with the exterior and interior of the building.
A fabulous setting for lunch. Do book as it can get extremely busy. The buffet lunch & range of salads are fantastic. Can highly recommend.
Nice venue for hire with large grounds. Originally used by the Knights Templars back in the 14th century and by the King's court when it was transferred from York to Westminster.
Excellent service and delicious food in beautiful surroundings.
